Fuerteventura’s Tourism Strategic Action Plan for 2025: A Vision for Sustainable Growth

The Council of the Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura convened for its ordinary session, where it endorsed the Action Plan for 2025. This plan is a key component of the Strategic Tourism Plan (PET 2022-2026) and sets the framework for various initiatives centered on the promotion and enhancement of Fuerteventura as a premier tourist destination.

Embracing the Blue Destination Concept

A significant takeaway from this meeting was the collective commitment to branding Fuerteventura as a “Blue Destination.” This initiative aims to focus on improving the tourist experience while ensuring sustainable practices that also benefit the local economy. Lola García, President of the Cabildo, emphasized the importance of promoting spending by tourists within the destination, thereby fostering local sustainable development. The goal is clear: to create a win-win scenario where tourism thrives and local communities benefit.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Forefront

García also underscored the strategic pursuit of innovation and sustainability. The vision is not merely to attract visitors but to do so in a manner that respects and values Fuerteventura’s rich ethnographic heritage. Rather than pursuing new construction, the focus is placed on renovation, ensuring that the beauty and essence of the island are maintained for generations to come.

Solid Growth Indicators

Marlene Figueroa, the Insular Tourism Councillor, highlighted the positive trajectory of Fuerteventura’s tourism sector. Recent data and trends indicate successful coordination among stakeholders and the establishment of stability and confidence within the market. The focus remains firmly on sustainability, aiming to enhance the natural environment and cultural heritage while ensuring that the benefits of tourism are felt broadly within the local economy.

Enhancing Labor Conditions

An essential part of the conversation during this session revolved around labor conditions in the tourism sector. Figueroa pointed out that improving working conditions is crucial for retaining and attracting talent, thereby respecting and dignifying the contributions of those who make Fuerteventura a high-quality destination. A well-supported workforce is vital for the success and sustainability of tourism in the region.

Four Pillars of the Strategic Tourism Plan

The Action Plan for 2025 is structured around four main pillars:

  1. Governance and Excellence: This involves implementing a robust tourism governance system that ensures quality and excellence in service.

  2. Destination Products and Experiences: This includes the development of diverse tourism products and experiences, ensuring Fuerteventura meets varying tourist expectations.

  3. Marketing and Promotion Actions: A comprehensive marketing strategy to promote Fuerteventura as a Blue Destination will be rolled out, highlighting unique offerings such as gastronomic, inland, sports, and nature tourism.

  4. Adapting Supply to Demand Trends: Strategies will be fine-tuned to align with current tourism trends to ensure that offerings resonate with potential visitors.

Enhancing Air Connectivity and Partnerships

Improving regular air connectivity over the medium to long term is also a focus of the Action Plan. Strengthening collaborations with tour operators, airlines, and travel agencies will be crucial for attracting diverse tourist profiles. This concerted effort is expected to lead to increased expenditures by tourists while visiting.

Launching a Tourist Observatory

One of the ambitious projects underway is the establishment of a Tourist Observatory, undertaken in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). This initiative promises to provide invaluable data regarding tourist behavior and market trends, vital for informed decision-making and reputation management among Fuerteventura’s stakeholders.

Upcoming Symposium on Sustainable Development

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainability, Fuerteventura will host its first Sustainable Development Symposium on June 19 and 20, 2025. This event will bring together experts and tourism authorities to explore sustainable strategies that extend beyond 2023, ensuring the long-term viability of the tourism sector.

The announcement from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura reflects a comprehensive approach to enhancing the tourism landscape on the island, focusing on sustainability, local enhancement, and innovative practices designed for a lasting impact. The Action Plan for 2025 is not just a document; it serves as a roadmap for a promising future for Fuerteventura’s tourism.
