Investment in Puerto del Rosario: A Boost for Local Fishing
The Government of the Canary Islands has announced a significant investment of €150,000 earmarked for a direct grant to the Puerto del Rosario City Council. This funding is aimed at supporting the construction of a fish auction hall, a development that stands to enhance the infrastructure for local artisanal fishermen.
Approval from the Council of Government
This boost in funding comes after the Council of Government authorized a credit transfer to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing, and Food Sovereignty. The decision addresses an earlier oversight related to the budgetary allotment outlined in the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands for the fiscal year 2026. Initially, the funds were incorrectly classified under Chapter IV (current transfers) rather than the more appropriate Chapter VII (capital transfers), which aligns more closely with the nature of the investment.
The Vision for the Fish Auction Hall
The proposed project is designed specifically for the needs of artisanal fishing professionals based at the capital’s port. It envisions the future construction of a ground-level building with a mezzanine, dedicated exclusively to auction hall functionalities. This facility will handle essential operations, including reception, weighing, handling, preservation, traceability, and the initial sale of fish products.
Specifications of the New Infrastructure
The new fish auction hall is set to cover a total usable area of 123.65 square meters. Of that space, 100 square meters will be allocated to the ground floor. The design ensures the functionality necessary for the proper commercialization of fresh seafood, encompassing civil works, complete installations, and all equipment required for day-to-day operations.
The layout is meticulously organized to maximize efficiency. The ground floor features a sales area measuring 36.90 square meters, along with a storage room of 12.20 square meters. Office space and restrooms will occupy 8.45 square meters in total, complemented by technical areas totaling 28.65 square meters. These specialized sections will house maintenance facilities, a cold storage room, and a freezer chamber, all aimed at preserving the quality of the catch.
Maximizing Space with a Mezzanine
To optimize the use of space, the plan incorporates a mezzanine that includes a machinery room of 29.05 square meters alongside an additional storage area of 8.40 square meters. This thoughtful use of vertical space not only increases the facility’s capacity but also streamlines operations, making it easier for fishermen and seafood professionals to manage their businesses effectively.
Supporting the Local Fishing Industry
This initiative signifies more than just a new structure; it represents a commitment to bolstering the local fishing industry and supporting the livelihoods of those who depend on it. By investing in enhanced facilities, the Government of the Canary Islands is laying the groundwork for sustainable fishing practices, improved market conditions, and better economic opportunities for local fishermen.
In summary, the construction of the fish auction hall in Puerto del Rosario is set to revolutionize the way fish is commercialized in the region, ensuring that both fishers and consumers benefit from a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to fresh seafood.
