The Innovation Pavilion at SMOPYC: A Hub for Future-Forward Construction and Machinery
The International Public Works, Construction and Mining Machinery Exhibition (SMOPYC) is gearing up for its 20th edition, and this year, it’s introducing the Innovation Pavilion—a dedicated space that embodies the future of technology, sustainability, and professional development within the sector. Organized by a coalition of key industry players, including the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Machinery for Construction, Public Works and Mining (ANMOPYC), the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITA), the Spanish Technological Platform for Construction (PTEC), and the National Federation of Excavators (FENAEX), this pavilion promises to be a focal point for innovation.
A Meeting Point for Industry Stakeholders
The Innovation Pavilion is designed to be a vibrant meeting point for all stakeholders involved in the transformation of the construction and machinery sectors. This includes manufacturers, technology centers, associations, and the next generation of operators and technicians. As the industry evolves rapidly, this initiative aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among those who are shaping its future.
A Multifaceted Space: Zones of Innovation
The pavilion is structured into four distinct activity areas, each showcasing different aspects of innovation:
The ITA Zone
At the heart of the Innovation Pavilion is the ITA Zone, where attendees can explore four groundbreaking prototypes developed through R&D projects. Among the highlights are:
- A 20-ton autonomous wheel loader: This machine represents a significant leap in automation, designed to enhance efficiency on job sites.
- A vertical printer for facades: This innovative technology allows for intricate designs to be printed directly onto building surfaces, revolutionizing architectural possibilities.
- A hydrogen-powered tractor unit: This prototype showcases the potential for cleaner energy sources in heavy machinery.
- An autonomous truck for quarry operations: Designed to streamline operations, this truck emphasizes digitalization and sustainability.
These prototypes not only exemplify technological advancements but also reflect a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of construction activities.
The Associations Zone
The Associations Zone will serve as a gathering place for major organizations in the sector. Here, attendees can engage with representatives from ANMOPYC, ITA, PTEC, FENAEX, ALIANZA ELEVA, and the Construction Labor Foundation (FLC). This zone will facilitate networking and collaboration, allowing stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the industry.
The Presentation Hall
The Presentation Hall will host a series of technical sessions that delve into critical topics such as digitalization, automation, energy sustainability, and machinery safety. Each session will feature four short presentations followed by a roundtable discussion with industry experts. The schedule includes:
- April 15 (10:30–12:00): Digitalization of Machinery and Construction—Exploring the role of digital technologies in transforming machinery and construction processes.
- April 15 (12:15–13:45): Robotization and Automation in Construction Machinery—Focusing on advancements in autonomous machinery and remote operation.
- April 15 (16:00–17:30): New Energy Sources and Decarbonization of Machinery—Discussing solutions for reducing emissions in off-road mobile machinery.
- April 17 (11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.): Technological Innovation for Machinery and Construction Safety—Highlighting technologies that enhance operator safety and improve work environments.
These sessions are designed to provide valuable insights into the latest trends and innovations shaping the industry.
Spotlight on Future Talent: The 2nd Competition for Future Professionals
One of the standout features of the Innovation Pavilion is the 2nd Competition for Future Professionals in Machinery and Lifting. Organized by AFUPRO (Association for Future Professionals) with support from SMOPYC and ELEVA, this competition aims to showcase young talent and encourage generational renewal in an industry facing a skills gap.
The competition begins with an evaluation phase where students and training centers across Spain submit videos demonstrating their skills. The AFUPRO Evaluation Committee selects 12 finalists who will compete in a practical phase at SMOPYC 2026. This hands-on experience allows participants to demonstrate their abilities in real-world scenarios, judged by industry professionals.
Finalists hail from vocational training centers across six autonomous communities, including notable institutions like CPIFP Javier Imbroda in Seville and IES Ginés Pérez Chirinos in Murcia. This diverse representation underscores the widespread interest and investment in nurturing the next generation of professionals in the sector.
A Vision for the Future
The Innovation Pavilion at SMOPYC is set to become a pivotal space for discovering how innovation and talent are reshaping the construction and machinery sectors. By bringing together cutting-edge technology, industry leaders, and aspiring professionals, this initiative aims to foster a collaborative environment that drives the industry forward. As the event unfolds, attendees can look forward to engaging discussions, groundbreaking prototypes, and a glimpse into the future of construction and machinery.
