The New Express Line 3 Launches with Three Electric Buses

New Express Line 3 Launches: A Step Forward for Public Transport in Fuerteventura

This Monday marked the exciting launch of the new Express Line 3, a vital transportation service designed to enhance connectivity between Puerto del Rosario, the airport, and Caleta de Fuste. The initiative reflects the ongoing efforts of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, specifically the Transport and Mobility Department, to improve public transport on the island while addressing key concerns voiced by residents.

Enhanced Accessibility with Electric Buses

The new service will operate using three high-performance electric buses, ensuring complete accessibility for all users. This move supports Fuerteventura’s commitment to a more sustainable mobility model. The acquisition of the electric vehicles represents an investment of nearly two million euros, fully financed by Next Generation EU funds earmarked for sustainable mobility projects, with no financial burden on the Cabildo.

Administrative Support for the Initiative

Lola García, president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving public transport and facilitating mobility. She noted that this express line will significantly reduce travel times on one of the island’s busiest routes, enhancing the quality of life for daily commuters—whether they be workers, students, or individuals running errands.

García also mentioned that the increased frequency of service over the weekends addresses long-standing requests from the hospitality sector and passengers who need better connectivity during busy weekends when economic activity peaks. The introduction of electric buses marks a new milestone in their mission to decrease environmental footprints.

User-Focused Design

Luis González, the Transport and Mobility councillor, highlighted that the new line was designed with real user needs in mind, prioritizing speed, comfort, and connectivity to key locations. “Our goal is to make the bus a practical option for daily travel,” he stated. This launch is part of broader measures being implemented to enhance public transport, including increased frequencies across various lines and fleet modernization.

Support from Government Officials

María Fernández, the General Director of Transport and Mobility for the Canary Islands Government, praised the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s commitment to enhancing public transport. She remarked that the addition of these electric buses contributes to creating a more efficient, punctual, and safe transport system that meets the real needs of the community. Her acknowledgment of the investment in electric buses, the installation of rapid charging points, and a new vehicle tracking system reflects the progressive attitude toward transportation in the region.

Fernández pointed out that public transport is the backbone of sustainable mobility in the Canary Islands and emphasized that initiatives like this promote equal opportunities, enabling access to jobs, education, and essential services.

Enhanced Connectivity and Efficiency

The new Express Line 3 will provide a direct connection to Fuerteventura Airport with fewer stops, making journeys faster and more comfortable for users. This reduction in stops allows for significantly shorter travel times, particularly for one of the most in-demand segments of the population seeking efficient travel options.

Increased Weekend Services

In addition to maintaining regular frequencies during weekdays, the express service will see a substantial increase in availability during weekends. Specifically, service on Saturdays will rise from 66 to 98 runs—an impressive 48.5% increase—while Sundays will see an increase from 47 to 60 runs. This enhancement is part of a broader strategy to modernize public transport, improving connections between major population centers while fostering a more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly mode of travel.
