Celebrations Await: The Exciting Preparations for the Fiestas in Honor of Nuestra Señora de La Antigua
As summer draws to a close, the charming town of Antigua immerses itself in a flurry of activity and colorful anticipation. El alcalde, Matías Peña, along with the council members, including Agustín G. Rodríguez, responsible for festivities, and Juan Cabrera, who oversees public works and services, recently convened with the enthusiastic young representatives of the Comisión de Fiestas. Their meeting was dedicated to curating an engaging festival program that promises a blend of surprises and appeals to all ages and tastes.
Reviving Tradition: The Dates and Decorations
The Fiestas Patronales in Honor of Nuestra Señora de La Antigua are set to commence from the 20th of August and continue until Sunday, the 8th of September. In the days leading up to the festivities, the Ayuntamiento (City Hall) is diligently preparing to adorn the plazas, streets, and homes of Antigua. One of the cherished traditions that mark this period is the resounding peal of bells that rings out each morning, welcoming residents and visitors alike to the vibrant celebrations ahead.
A Diverse Program of Events
This year’s festive calendar is bursting with an array of activities designed to cater to the diverse interests of the community. Attendees can look forward to lively card tournaments, engaging children’s parties, and mesmerizing folkloric performances featuring local parrandas. The musical offerings will be just as eclectic, including rock, pop, and cumbia concerts, alongside traditional late-night verbenas featuring lively orchestras.
In what promises to be a highlight of the festivities, the official program will soon be unveiled, featuring a specially appointed pregonero de honor, the renowned artisan Pepe Melián Martín. The festival’s agenda will weave together beloved local traditions, from a communal feast to heartfelt tributes celebrating the rich heritage of Canary wrestling, known as lucha canaria.
Celebrating Community and Culture
The program also encompasses significant cultural expressions, such as the romería – a spirited pilgrimage that brings the community together. Further enhancing the festivities will be the atmospheric fireworks display, the colorful floral procession, and the popular toast that unites attendees in a spirit of camaraderie. Added to these enchanting events are the dawn serenades, ensuring that festivities begin bright and early.
Investment in Heritage
Mayor Matías Peña expressed pride in the collaboration with the Comisión de Fiestas, emphasizing the role of the local government in supporting every proposal and initiative. “The work done by the Festejos and Obras y Servicios departments has been remarkable,” he noted, recognizing the invaluable experience of council member Jonathan Peña in the musical and festive domains.
This year, the Ayuntamiento has committed a budget of €40,000 for the festivities in each village, with over €250,000 allocated for the patronal celebrations throughout the municipality. This investment underscores the significance of the fiestas as a cultural cornerstone, bringing together generations and fostering community spirit.
Looking Ahead
Antigua is poised for a memorable celebration, where tradition meets modern festivity in a spectacular display of culture and community pride. With a rich program planned, the anticipation among local residents and visitors is tangible, setting the stage for a remarkable series of events that will echo through the hearts of all who take part.
