As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, recent developments in local regulations signal a commitment to streamlined urban planning.
On February 5, 2026, the Puerto del Rosario City Council officially approved modifications to the Municipal Building Ordinance—an essential move aimed at enhancing legal certainty and optimizing urban planning processes. This initiative aligns local regulations with contemporary regional legislative standards.
The decision marks the culmination of a process that began in January 2025, which included public consultations, initial approvals, and a period for public commentary. Notably, input was gathered from the Official Association of Architects of Fuerteventura and the Vice-Ministry of Administrations and Transparency of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Following thorough evaluation by municipal technical and legal teams, the City Council addressed various concerns raised during the consultation phase. Key modifications encompass greater flexibility in parking provisions, clearer guidelines for agricultural uses on shared land, and adjustments to coastal site regulations to comply with national Coastal regulations.
Moreover, the updated ordinance aims to standardize interpretative criteria, thus facilitating the work of professionals and reducing administrative processing times. This enhancement contributes to a more efficient and transparent urban management system.
Ana Hernández, the Councilor for Urban Planning, emphasized the collaborative nature of this undertaking, stating, “We have conducted thorough work, listening to involved groups and enriching the original text with valuable contributions. This ordinance will streamline administrative processes, improve project quality, and better meet the current needs of our municipality.”
These changes position Puerto del Rosario as an increasingly attractive locale for investments in urban development, reflecting a proactive approach to growing and managing the region effectively.
