Celebrating the Reyes Magos in Fuerteventura: A Magical Tradition

This Sunday, January 5, Fuerteventura will come alive with the joyous celebration of the Reyes Magos, or the Three Wise Men. This time-honored tradition fills the hearts of both young and old with excitement as the island prepares for a day full of activities across its six municipalities. From festive parades to the distribution of letters, the magic of the Reyes Magos enchants everyone.

A Historical Return to Betancuria

On Saturday, January 4, the picturesque town of Betancuria will host the historic Auto de Reyes Magos at 7:30 PM. This theatrical performance, dating back to the 12th century, is the first work in Castilian romance and returns after a fourteen-year hiatus. Residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in this unique exploration of history and culture.

The Grand Arrival in Puerto del Rosario

The celebrations kick off on January 5 in Puerto del Rosario, where Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar will begin their day with a special visit to the hospital at 11:30 AM. The real pomp and pageantry unfold later in the afternoon when the grand procession departs from the Muelle Comercial at 5:30 PM. The cabalgata, a festive parade, will wind through the main streets, culminating at the Giant Nativity Scene in a vibrant display of music, color, and joy. The joyous meeting between the Magi and the public is sure to create memorable moments.

A Warm Welcome in La Oliva

La Oliva will also participate in the celebrations from early morning, with parades starting at 9:00 AM through the various village streets. Later in the day, Corralejo will host a grand cavalcade at 6:00 PM along Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen, ending at Plaza Patricio Calero. This event provides a perfect opportunity for the royalty to collect children’s wish letters, infused with hopes and dreams.

Evening Spectacles in Tuineje

In Tuineje, the festivities will include two vibrant cabalgatas. One will commence at 5:00 PM, and another in Gran Tarajal at 6:30 PM, following a morning tour of several localities, including the newly added Cardón. Spectators can look forward to cliff-hanging performances from jugglers, dazzling floats, and various spectacles that create an atmosphere filled with magic and wonder.

The Heart of Antigua

Antigua will join in on the revelry as well, where the mayor will hand over the Master Key of the municipality to the Magi. Their journey begins at the Muelle del Castillo around 4:30 PM, concluding at the plaza of Antigua at 7:00 PM. Here, amidst twinkling lights and lively music, the King’s greetings will embrace everyone, inviting all to share their holiday wishes.

Magical Celebrations in Pájara

In Pájara, there will be three major parades in Morro Jable, Costa Calma, and Pájara at 5:00 PM. These traditional festivities will also include a morning appearance in La Lajita, Ajuy, and Cardón, promising an enchanting mix of magic and adherence to traditions.

A Special Evening in La Lajita

One of the standout celebrations takes place in La Lajita, where a collaboration between Oasis Wildlife and the Chekipa Foundation sets the stage for a captivating experience. Starting at 10:00 PM, this event will echo the essence of past celebrations. Participants can look forward to camel processions, torch-lit walks, and traditional music, leading to a living Nativity scene and a delightful homemade chocolate celebration that brings the community together.
