Puerto del Rosario Unveils New Commercial Routes

This Tuesday, the Ayuntamiento (City Council) of Puerto del Rosario introduced an innovative initiative known as the Commercial Routes. This ambitious project aims to intertwine the rich heritage, culture, tourism, and local commerce of the area to stimulate the city center and provide a refreshing experience for both residents and visitors.

Unveiling the Thematic Routes

The announcement took place at the Casa-Museo de Miguel de Unamuno, a fitting venue given that one of the two thematic routes—The Miguel de Unamuno Route—focuses on the literary legacy the renowned author left during his time in Fuerteventura. The second route, known as the Sculptural Route, offers a unique journey through the public art installations that adorn the streets of Puerto del Rosario.

Key Stakeholders Present

The event was attended by several key figures, including the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David De Vera Cabrera; the Councillor for Commerce, Tacoremi Gutierrez Gutierrez; and Daniela Plotegher, the president of the Merchants Association. Borja Palmer, a representative of Laureon—the company responsible for the technical design and development of the Commercial Routes—also shared insights during the presentation.

A New Way to Explore the City

Mayor De Vera Cabrera emphasized that these routes go beyond mere urban signage. They represent a fresh approach to discovering the city, seamlessly merging historical and cultural heritage with vital support for local businesses. He noted that the initiative received co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Canary Islands Smart Commercial Destination program. This illustrates how European funds can lead to tangible improvements benefitting both the community and local enterprises.

Building Community Engagement

The mayor also took a moment to thank the municipal technical services and the support from the Merchants Association, urging both locals and visitors to explore the routes. He encouraged everyone to experience the commercial offerings of Puerto del Rosario and learn about the city’s history along the way.

Promoting Local Commerce

For her part, Councillor Gutierrez expressed her excitement about the launch, noting it was a project in the works for months. She explained that the routes are designed not only as cultural and tourist attractions but also as a direct promotional tool for participating businesses.

Each business involved will display a distinctive sign featuring a QR code, which visitors can scan with their mobile devices to access real-time information about the shop. The distribution of these identifiers has begun, and businesses that haven’t yet received them will be able to pick them up soon from the Commerce Department at the Ayuntamiento.

Enhancing Visitor Experience

The goal is clear: those walking along the Miguel de Unamuno Route or the Sculptural Route should not only appreciate the heritage of Puerto del Rosario but also enter local shops to discover their offerings and contribute to the local economy. Gutierrez also acknowledged the commitment of current merchants and invited others to join in this initiative, which is poised to enhance their visibility.

Strengthening Merchant Collaboration

During the presentation, the president of the Merchants Association highlighted the vital cooperation between the city council and the commercial sector. She stressed the importance of promoting innovative projects that empower small businesses and help revitalize the streets of the municipality.

Technological Integration

Borja Palmer provided a technical overview of how the routes would function, demonstrating live how users can engage with the app via QR codes, allowing them access to historical, cultural, and commercial content on any mobile device. This enriches the experience of visitors to the center of Puerto del Rosario.

Embracing Modernization

The new Commercial Routes are part of a broader municipal strategy aimed at modernizing and digitizing urban commerce. This initiative showcases a commitment to creating a more innovative, accessible, and interconnected city where heritage, technology, and economic activities advance together.

Puerto del Rosario is taking significant strides to reinforce its dedication to local commerce, embrace digital transformation, and celebrate the cultural elements that define the municipality.
