El Cabildo Insular Assures Water Supply Issues Almost Resolved
Residents in several northern localities of Fuerteventura have been grappling with water supply interruptions that have significantly disrupted their daily lives. Areas most affected include Majanicho, Lajares, El Roque, Villaverde, and El Cotillo, where supply issues still persisted as of Thursday.
Origin of the Water Supply Issues
The root cause of the ongoing supply problems traces back to a malfunction reported in Villaverde, which caused a ripple effect by impacting the transport and distribution system across the entire water supply network in the northern part of the island. Although the Consortium of Water Supply of Fuerteventura has indicated that the main issue is now nearly resolved, the repercussions continue to be felt by the community.
Ongoing Work in El Cotillo
In the midst of resolving these complications, Adargoma Hernández, the Councilor for Water of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, stated, “While we are still working on normalizing the situation, we are confident that the large-scale issue appears to be resolved.” He elaborated that the water supply networks cover vast distances, making them susceptible to disruptions from any single incident or breakdown.
As of Wednesday, many of the affected localities have begun to see service restoration; however, work continues into Thursday in El Cotillo. The urgency to resolve issues in this area is amplified due to the upcoming festivities in honor of the Virgen del Buen Viaje, a cherished local celebration.

Planned Service Interruptions for Future Improvements
Moreover, the Consortium has announced a scheduled water shutdown towards the end of the month. This planned interruption aims to drain the Lajares reservoir in order to connect a new network as part of emergency works designed to structurally improve the water supply within the municipality of La Oliva.
Authorities are urging local residents to exercise patience, emphasizing that these interventions aim to secure a more stable and efficient water supply in the medium term. In the meantime, many residents are hopeful that the improvements will lead to long-lasting solutions to their water supply issues.
