A Disheartening Holiday Experience: Carol Hutchins’ Mobility Scooter Dilemma

Traveling can be a joyous experience, especially when it involves a long-awaited holiday in the sun. For Carol Hutchins, a disabled woman from the UK, this dream quickly turned into a nightmare when she was unable to board her flight to the Canary Islands due to complications with her mobility scooter battery.

The Anticipated Getaway

Carol had been eagerly looking forward to her trip to the TUI Magic Life Hotel in Fuerteventura, planned for late October. Accompanied by her daughter, Layla, the holiday was meant to be a refreshing escape from the daily grind. However, their excitement was abruptly halted at Manchester Airport when staff informed them that Carol’s mobility scooter could not be transported on the plane.

The Heartbreak of Cancellation

The news left Carol “very upset,” not only because of the emotional toll of missing out on the holiday but also due to the financial implications. With over £1,000 spent on the trip, the cancellation was a significant loss. While TUI, the airline, stated that they had followed proper procedures, the situation serves as a cautionary tale for others traveling with mobility aids.

Understanding the Regulations

A spokesperson for TUI explained that the cancellation was due to the absence of required documentation and battery identification information for Carol’s electric mobility aid. According to airline safety guidelines, batteries must be clearly labeled with their type and watt-hour (Wh) rating. Failure to comply can lead to refusal of transport, as was the case for Carol.

Communication Breakdown

Carol had booked her holiday through the TUI Doncaster branch on October 23, 2025, just under two weeks before departure. During the booking process, staff contacted the welfare team to ensure that her mobility scooter was included in the reservation. TUI confirmed that they had emailed Carol the Conditions of Carriage multiple times, which outline essential requirements for passengers traveling with mobility equipment.

These conditions emphasize the importance of having the necessary documentation, including the manufacturer’s operating instructions, to facilitate the safe transport of mobility scooters. Unfortunately, when Carol and Layla arrived at the airport, her scooter’s battery lacked any identifying label, preventing airport staff from allowing it to fly.

Alternative Options Offered

In an effort to assist, a duty manager at the airport coordinated with the Fuerteventura resort to arrange an alternative mobility scooter for Carol’s use during their stay. However, Layla reported that Carol felt uncomfortable traveling without her own scooter, fearing that she might not have a suitable replacement upon arrival.

TUI also offered Carol and Layla two alternative flights and goodwill vouchers, which they ultimately declined. The emotional weight of the situation made it difficult for them to consider these options.

A Lesson for Future Travelers

Carol’s experience highlights the importance of being well-informed and prepared when traveling with mobility aids. TUI’s website features a dedicated section outlining what customers need to know about traveling with mobility scooters, including the necessary documentation and safety requirements.

As more people with disabilities seek to travel, it becomes increasingly vital for airlines and travel companies to ensure that their policies are clear and accessible. This incident serves as a reminder for travelers to double-check all requirements well in advance of their trips, especially when it comes to specialized equipment like mobility scooters.

While Carol’s holiday dreams were dashed, her story underscores the need for better communication and understanding between travelers and airlines, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the freedom of travel without unnecessary hurdles.
