Fuerteventura Celebrates the XXVI Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos
This past Sunday, Fuerteventura was ablaze with excitement as it hosted the 26th edition of the Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos – Fuerteventura, an iconic swimming event organized by the Club Deportivo Herbania. This year, the event drew over 280 swimmers from around the globe, including participants from London, Germany, Costa Rica, and various regions of Spain and the Canary Islands. Their collective passion for the ocean created an unforgettable atmosphere.
Perfect Conditions for a Memorable Journey
The conditions for the swim were simply idyllic. Picture-perfect, glassy waters surrounded the swimmers as they embarked from the tiny islet of Lobos to the bustling docks of Corralejo. The crystal-clear waters of the La Bocaina channel were enchanting; swimmers reported visibility so good that they could see the ocean floor beneath them. With the perfect weather accompanying the event, it was a day that many would remember vividly.
A Splash of Emotion and Excitement
The kickoff was nothing short of spectacular. Participants jumped from the boats, El Majorero and Celia Cruz, creating a heartwarming sight against the backdrop of the islet and the mesmerizing dunes of Corralejo. The enthusiasm grew as hundreds of swimmers made their way into the shimmering waters, buoyed by cheers from supporters lined along the bay.
The strong sense of community was palpable, as volunteers in kayaks ensured the safety of the swimmers throughout the course. It was a magical progression from start to finish.
Celebrating Swimmers’ Achievements
In the competitive spirit, the first to reach the finish line was Herminio Fernández Alperi from Club Nadamas, completing the swim in an impressive time of 40:16. He was followed closely by 14-year-old Matías Padrón, also from the same club, who earned a remarkable second place with a time of 41:57. Rounding out the podium was Nicolás Padrón Miguélez, also clocking an impressive time.
On the female front, victory went to Naira Jaen Serra, also from Club Nadamas, with a time of 43:39. She was accompanied on the podium by Alexandra Sánchez Clark and Elena Sarmiento Guerra from CD Swim & Train Maspalomas, who finished in second and third places, respectively.
The spirit of adventure and determination was further exemplified by the inspiring presence of 83-year-old Mauricio Zanahan, the oldest swimmer to complete the event, proving that passion for the ocean knows no age.
Awards and Recognition
The accomplishments were duly celebrated. Herminio Alperi and Naira Jaen Serra, as first-place finishers, received a prize of 250 euros in cash. Second and third place winners were treated to gourmet product lots, emphasizing the support from local businesses and sponsors.
The event saw the attendance of notable figures, including the Sports Councillor of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Gleiber Carreño, who joined in congratulating the participants and highlighted the importance of such events for local culture.
