As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the island is making strides in sustainable waste management initiatives.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Waste Department has recently acquired 470 new side-loading containers aimed at enhancing selective waste collection. This development, supported by European Next Generation funds allocated through the Canary Islands’ Department of Tourism, represents an investment of €709,227.
The new containers will be gradually integrated into the island’s waste management network alongside the launch of a new selective collection service, which is currently in the final stages of processing. Of the total containers, half are designated for the collection of lightweight packaging, while the other half will focus on paper and cardboard.
This acquisition will expand Fuerteventura’s container network from over 1,300 to nearly 1,800 units, marking a significant 35% increase. Additionally, the new service contract will introduce two side-loading trucks, enhancing service coverage and improving the efficiency of collection routes across the island’s municipalities.
In recent years, Fuerteventura has excelled in increasing the collection rates for lightweight packaging and paper-cardboard, leading the entire Canary Islands in this endeavor. Furthermore, the island is at the forefront of glass waste collection, a trend that reflects successful collaboration between local authorities and residents.
Such initiatives not only promote environmental sustainability but also position Fuerteventura as an attractive location for responsible investment and living.
