As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the island is making significant advancements in its waste management infrastructure.
The Waste Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura recently announced the acquisition of 470 new side-loading containers aimed at enhancing the selective waste collection system. This initiative, funded by the European Next Generation program through the Department of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, marks an investment of €709,227.
These new containers will be gradually integrated into Fuerteventura’s waste management network, coinciding with the implementation of a new selective collection service contract currently underway. Of the total units purchased, 235 will be dedicated to the collection of light packaging, while the remaining 235 will be utilized for paper and cardboard.
This expansion will increase the island’s container network from over 1,300 to almost 1,800 units, representing a 35% growth. Additionally, the new service contract will introduce two new side-loading trucks, streamlining collection routes and enhancing service across all municipalities.
Fuerteventura has emerged as a leader in the Canary Islands for the collection of light packaging and paper/cardboard in recent years. In terms of glass waste, the island also ranks at the forefront, signaling a positive trend driven by effective collaboration between public administrations and the local community.
