José Juan Herrera: Championing Fuerteventura’s Culinary Scene

José Juan Herrera serves as the Counselor of Commerce, Industry, and the Network of Centers and Museums of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. He is at the forefront of initiatives designed to elevate the island’s gastronomic profile, the latest being the inaugural Ruta de las Tapas de Fuerteventura.

The Launch of the Island’s First Tapas Route

The Cabildo has taken significant steps to kickstart an island-wide event aimed at promoting Fuerteventura’s culinary delights while engaging the entire hospitality sector. The Ruta de las Tapas de Fuerteventura will commence in Tuineje from March 23 to April 7, followed by Pájara from April 13 to April 28. The route will then continue in Puerto del Rosario from May 4 to May 19, Antigua and Betancuria from May 25 to June 9, and finally La Oliva from June 15 to June 30. The initial feedback from local businesses has been overwhelmingly positive, with hopes for a high participation rate among establishments.

Key Objectives of the Tapas Route

The primary goal of the Tapas Route is to attract locals and visitors alike to explore the diverse culinary offerings across Fuerteventura’s municipalities. Herrera emphasizes the importance of showcasing the innovative gastronomic efforts currently taking place on the island. He believes this initiative will not only increase foot traffic to local businesses but also encourage greater professionalism and improvement within the hospitality sector. “Events of this kind serve as an incentive and help highlight what we can offer,” he said.

Incentives for Participants and Consumers

Consumer engagement will play a crucial role in the success of the event. Awards will be given to the best tapas, with categories including bronze, silver, and gold, as chosen by the public. A professional jury will select the platinum tapas winner, who will earn a chance to compete in the prestigious Concurso Nacional de Pinchos y Tapas in Valladolid. This unique format aims to engage citizens while promoting diverse culinary experiences across the island.

Gastronomy as a Tourist Attraction

José Juan Herrera notes that Fuerteventura’s gastronomic scene is currently thriving and is becoming an increasingly vital component of the islands’ tourism offerings. The Cabildo is fully aware of the need to enhance their competitive edge and improve the overall culinary landscape. Collaborations with Lanzarote are in the works, including the creation of a Saborea Fuerteventura initiative, modeled after Lanzarote’s successful program. This partnership aims to organize joint culinary events and facilitate exchanges between the two islands, fostering a vibrant culinary community.

Plans for the Saborea Fuerteventura Initiative

Conversations are already underway to position Fuerteventura alongside Lanzarote and Tenerife under the broader Saborea España umbrella, a platform dedicated to enhancing culinary visibility. Herrera outlines that establishing this initiative requires comprehensive collaboration, involving not just restaurants but also local farmers, fishers, and producers. The upcoming Tapas Route presents a significant opportunity to begin this collaborative journey towards elevating the island’s culinary identity.

Benefits for the Hospitality and Agricultural Sectors

The unique gastronomic elements present in Fuerteventura—such as its award-winning cheese and celebrated olive oil—set the stage for elevating its culinary status. Herrera emphasizes that the Saborea Fuerteventura label will help differentiate and position the island’s culinary offerings on both national and international stages. This focus on gastronomy is increasingly vital, as food becomes a more integral part of the travel experience.

Progress in Commercial Areas

Turning to commercial developments, Herrera shares the completion of renovations in the open commercial zone of Corralejo. The feedback from residents and business owners has been exceptionally positive, praising the improvements despite the inconveniences caused during construction. Plans for a second phase extending to the Paloma roundabout are in motion, with an investment of approximately one million euros expected this year.

Future Projects in Commercial Development

Looking ahead, Herrera details plans for additional expansion projects, including a commercial area in Gran Tarajal, with an investment of around €900,000. New renovations are also set for León y Castillo Street in Puerto del Rosario, along with updates in Virgen de la Peña. Coordination is key, and efforts are being made to streamline timelines to minimize impacts on local businesses.

Strengthening the Local Commercial Fabric

Despite the advancements, Herrera acknowledges the absence of an organized commercial fabric within the island. While there is an association for Puerto del Rosario, other vital areas lack a cohesive business community. To address this, plans are in motion to hire a manager for commercial zones who will support local businesses in securing funding and foster better connections with local authorities.

As Fuerteventura moves forward with these gastronomic and commercial initiatives, the island aims to reveal the extraordinary richness of its culinary heritage and further establish itself as a key player in the realm of culinary tourism.
