Inaugurated the 34th Fuerteventura Island Craft Fair 2023

Celebrating Craftsmanship: The XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura

On May 4th, the XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura officially opened, marking a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship and creativity. This much-awaited event takes place from May 4th to May 7th in the charming Plaza de Antigua and its surrounding streets. With about 115 artisans participating from all the Canary Islands, it showcases the rich cultural heritage and artistic skills unique to the region.

A Gathering of Creative Minds

The inauguration of the fair saw attendance from a broad array of guests, including representatives from local media, various municipal governments, and organizations dedicated to promoting commerce and artisanry. Key figures from local administration were present, including island council members, law enforcement, parliamentarians, and senators. Their presence underscored the importance of the event within the community, emphasizing the collective support for artisans and their work.

A Honoring Spirit

During his inaugural address, Matías Peña García, the mayor of Antigua, expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended. He acknowledged the vital role of artisans in preserving the island’s cultural heritage, highlighting the fair as a platform where their talents could shine. In a moving tribute, he honored those who have passed away or are in poor health, ensuring that their contributions would not be forgotten.

A User-Friendly Experience for Artisans

In a departure from previous years, the fair did not implement the usual organized tours of artisan stalls. This decision was made to offer artisans a respite, allowing them to focus on showcasing and selling their creations without interruption. By prioritizing their well-being, the organizers aimed to create an environment conducive to creativity and commerce.

Celebrating Excellence in Craftsmanship

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the mayor recognized María Hernández Hernández as the recipient of the 2023 Premio Insular de Artesanía. María’s dedication as a master basket weaver signifies a long-standing commitment to traditional practices, inspiring many around her. Her recognition stands as a testament to the talent and ability flourished within the artisan community of Fuerteventura.

Supporting the Local Artisan Community

The fair’s objectives extend beyond merely selling crafts; it fosters a environment where artisans can meet, share their experiences, and collaborate. Recognizing individual artisans, such as María Cabrera—another local creator known for her consistent participation in fairs—shows the community’s investment in the support and recovery of its members, especially during challenging times.

The XXXIV Feria Insular de Artesanía Fuerteventura stands as a rich tapestry of creativity and communal spirit. It not only highlights the work of talented artisans but also brings people together, ensuring the continuation of craft and culture within this beautiful island community.
