High-Stakes Drug Trafficking Trial Begins in Las Palmas

The legal landscape in Las Palmas is set to become a focal point of attention as the Provincial Court’s Sixth Section prepares to conduct a pivotal trial starting May 5. Thirteen individuals are facing severe allegations of being part of a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking on the island of Fuerteventura.

Background of the Case

The trial, which will unfold over several weeks, has been structured with meticulous planning. It will take place on designated days across both May and June, specifically on the 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd of May, followed by dates in June: the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, and 23rd. The case originated from the investigative efforts of the Juzgado de Instrucción number two in Puerto del Rosario.

Accusations of Organized Crime

According to the prosecution’s indictment, these 13 accused individuals are alleged to have not only participated in but also coordinated and organized a criminal network committed to the distribution of drugs detrimental to public health. The organization is said to have been active from February 14, 2018, until January 10, 2019.

Key Incidents in Drug Trafficking

The indictment outlines a series of incidents illustrating the criminal activities in question. One notable event occurred on May 25, 2018, when a Dominican national allegedly delivered nearly 10 grams of cocaine at Monte Castillo Shopping Center, near the Red Lion bar in Caleta de Fuste.

In a particularly striking case from October 14, 2018, a Venezuelan accused was stopped at the Fuerteventura Airport with 20 packages of cocaine weighing a total of 238.8 grams concealed internally. Another incident on December 10, 2018, involved a different Venezuelan national who attempted to transport 33 wraps, totaling 400.46 grams of cocaine.

Additionally, law enforcement also recorded a significant interception on September 21, 2018, at Hostal Tamasite in Puerto del Rosario, where a Venezuelan defendant was apprehended with 31 capsules containing approximately 483 grams of the narcotic.

Expansive Criminal Operations

The prosecution details multiple deliveries of cocaine, including a noteworthy incident on February 14, 2018. On this date, 20 packages containing nearly 200 grams of cocaine were reportedly delivered on Franchy Roca Street in Puerto del Rosario, further expanding the scope of the alleged drug operations occurring within urban settings.

Evidence Collection

The investigation also led to home searches on January 10, 2019, across several locations, including Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo, and Antigua. These raids uncovered various amounts of cocaine, large sums of cash, precision scales, mobile phones, and copious notes related to drug trafficking activities. One notable discovery included 5,085 euros at an address on Caladoras Street in Puerto del Rosario, with additional sums found elsewhere.

Legal Consequences and Sentencing

Due to the gravity of the situation, the prosecution takes a firm stand, seeking up to 17 years in prison for 10 of the accused. The recommended sentences include nine years for drug trafficking and an additional eight years for involvement in an organized crime entity, along with substantial fines totaling 660,500 euros.

For the remaining three defendants, the prosecution is pursuing six years for drug trafficking and three years for cooperation with a criminal organization, along with respective fines of 85,650, 43,000, and 71,000 euros.

Potential Deportation and Asset Forfeiture

The prosecutor’s office has also expressed intentions for some of the defendants to serve their sentences fully, underscoring the severity of the charges. Furthermore, three of the accused could face expulsion from Spain after serving a five-year prison sentence. In the event of a guilty verdict, the prosecution seeks definitive forfeiture of the drugs, cash, and any other items seized during the investigation.

Anticipating the Court Proceedings

As the trial approaches, the implications of these proceedings extend beyond the courtroom, impacting local communities and raising awareness of ongoing drug trafficking issues. With keen public interest and media coverage anticipated, the proceedings promise to shed further light on the complex dynamics of organized drug-related crime in the region.
