Enhancing Connectivity: Fuerteventura’s New Undersea Fiber-Optic Link
In a significant advancement for digital infrastructure, Canalink has successfully completed a new undersea fiber-optic cable connection in Costa Calma, Fuerteventura. This project connects the new branch to the main cable of the RING initiative, a groundbreaking telecommunications infrastructure designed to enhance connectivity between Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.
Strengthening Digital Connectivity
The completion of this undersea link represents a major step forward in reinforcing the digital connectivity and resilience of Fuerteventura’s communication systems. This announcement was made public on a recent Friday, signaling the island’s commitment to bolstering its digital framework. Canalink operates under the authority of the Cabildo de Tenerife and in collaboration with the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER).
Technical Implementation
One of the key components of this project was the laying of the trunk cable from Ojos de Garza beach to the coast near Matas Blancas. This intricate operation was handled by the cable-laying ship Teliri, which meticulously integrated the bifurcation unit aboard before installing it on the seabed. Experts from various fields, including technical teams and engineering consultants, played essential roles in ensuring that the deployment met both precision and safety standards.
New Branch Connection
The newly established branch will significantly benefit the southern region of Fuerteventura. Following the connection of this branch, the Teliri continued its work to further deploy this pivotal infrastructure, which is expected to connect the eastern islands through a robust fiber-optic submarine cable system.

Rubén Molowny, the CEO of Canalink, emphasized the importance of this connection for Fuerteventura. He stated that it would provide a more capable infrastructure with enhanced continuity guarantees, which is vital for an island reliant on robust and secure communications. The addition of this new branch to the Canalink network will diversify communication routes available to Fuerteventura. Financed through the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, this project also signifies a strategic investment in the region’s digital economy. The primary cable utilized in the RING initiative has received support from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) of the European Commission, highlighting its significance at the continental level.
