Intensive Clearing and Cleanup Efforts by the Cabildo in the Ravines of Betancuria

A Green Initiative: Cleaning Up Fuerteventura’s Natural Waterways

The Vision Behind the Initiative

El Cabildo de Fuerteventura, in collaboration with the Consejo Insular de Aguas de Fuerteventura (CIAF), is taking significant steps towards preserving the island’s natural beauty and ecological integrity. Through the Service of Works and Machinery, this initiative, part of the broader program titled “Fuerteventura, bonita por naturaleza,” aims to clean and maintain the local waterways, specifically the barrancos (ravines) that are essential to the island’s unique ecosystem.

The Importance of Waterway Maintenance

One of the primary objectives of this extensive cleaning effort is to ensure the efficient circulation of water through natural channels. By removing overgrown vegetation and debris, the teams mitigate the risk of uncontrolled water pooling, which can lead to dangerous flooding and torrents, especially during rainfall. These types of interventions are crucial not only for safety but also for maintaining the ecological balance within the island’s varied landscapes.

Multi-Faceted Approach to Improvement

The teams deployed under this program aren’t just focused on clearing waterways. Their work extends to several other areas, providing a holistic approach to environmental management:

  • Cleaning and Debris Removal: This includes the clearance of litter and organic waste, ensuring that the natural environment is rejuvenated.
  • Selective Pruning: The crews undertake targeted pruning activities to support the health of native flora while suppressing invasive species that threaten local biodiversity.
  • Rehabilitation of Dry Stone Walls: An essential component of the local cultural landscape, these structures are being restored for both aesthetic and functional purposes.
  • Pathway Maintenance: By improving access routes, the program enhances the ability of residents and visitors to enjoy these natural spaces, encouraging sustainable tourism and engagement with the island’s environment.

Impact So Far

Since the beginning of the year, the teams have made considerable strides in their work. Over six kilometers of waterways have been thoroughly addressed, resulting in the removal of approximately 220 cubic meters of waste, including trash and remnants of vegetation from previous cleanings. Moreover, nearly 1,700 linear meters of dry stone walls have been rehabilitated, contributing to both landscape preservation and ecological health.

Areas of Focus

The extensive efforts are primarily centered around Betancuria, a region known for its natural beauty. However, the impact of these actions spans multiple municipalities. Key locations of intervention include:

  • Barranco del Valle
  • Barranco de Las Peñitas
  • Majada Tenemuyaca
  • Barranco de La Fuente
  • Barranco Los Aceitunes

Each of these areas has its unique ecological value and challenges, and the program tailors its approaches accordingly.

Fostering Native Ecosystems

A crucial aim of the program is not only to cleanse and clear but also to protect and foster indigenous ecosystems. By prioritizing native species and taking steps to minimize the impact of invasive plants, the initiative promotes the longevity of Fuerteventura’s unique flora and fauna.

Community Involvement and Awareness

As the initiative unfolds, it also serves to raise awareness among the local community about the importance of environmental stewardship. Engaging residents in support of these efforts fosters a shared sense of responsibility, vital for the sustainability of the island’s natural resources.

Continued Efforts

As the program “Fuerteventura, bonita por naturaleza” progresses, it highlights an essential commitment to maintaining the island’s ecological integrity and natural beauty. The ongoing work ensures that these vital waterways remain clean and healthy, safeguarding not just the landscape but the overall well-being of the communities they support.
