Celebrating Life in Color: Puerto del Rosario Carnival 2026

Puerto del Rosario, the lively capital of Fuerteventura, has recently unveiled the exciting program for its highly anticipated Carnival 2026. Set to take place from February 6 to February 22, this year’s carnival embodies the theme “The World of Musicals,” promising a delightful and vibrant celebration that deeply resonates with the community’s unique identity.

A Kaleidoscope of Events

The carnival’s agenda is filled with a wide variety of activities, engaging citizens of all ages. Among the highlighted events are the iconic Carrera de Arretrankos, the Regata de Achipencos, the dynamic Gran Cabalgata, and the vibrant Carnaval de Día. The festivities also include grand galas, interactive murgas gatherings, and neighborhood activities that encourage participation from everyone.

A Community-Centric Celebration

During the official presentation of the carnival, Mayor David de Vera emphasized the communal spirit of the festival. He stated, “This Carnival is once again a celebration made by everyone, lived in the streets, reflecting the participatory character of our municipality.” Events like the Arretrankos, Achipencos, and the Cabalgata are not merely traditional acts but moments of connection, creativity, and shared joy for the people of Puerto del Rosario.

The mayor also underlined the importance of financial support for carnival groups, emphasizing that the administration committed to timely payments of subsidies. This, he believes, shows respect for the hard work that these groups invest throughout the year. He gratefully acknowledged the collaboration among local institutions, carnival associations, municipal staff, and security services, all of whom play pivotal roles in ensuring a well-organized and safe celebration.

A Cultural Mikado

Adargoma Hernández, the Youth Advisor of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, recognized the invaluable contributions of local carnival groups and the personnel involved, stating that “Carnival is culture; it’s more than just an expense; it’s an opportunity for youth and the social and cultural revitalization of the island.”

Tacoremi Gutiérrez, the Councilor for Festivities, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming program, praising the efforts of the Carnival Council in designing a lineup that respects the essence of Puerto del Rosario’s Carnival. She noted improvements in infrastructure, including a new municipal tent, and collaboration with the Tourism Board for hosting the Achipencos event, recognizing it as a major attraction for visitors.

Dancing into the Festivities

The carnival’s opening will kick off on Friday, February 6, with the traditional nacimiento de la sardina, a pregón by the Asociación Canaria de Escuelas de Danza de Fuerteventura (ACED), and the presentation of candidates for the titles of Adult, Child, and Grand Dame. The festivities will officially commence with the carnival’s iconic opening horn.

The following day, Saturday, February 7, will see the second edition of the Carrera de Arretrankos, an event marked by its unique charm and community engagement. Throughout the week, various activities, including workshops and entertainment, will reach out to neighborhoods, ensuring that the carnival spirit permeates every corner of the municipality.

Weekend Highlights and Gala Extravaganzas

The weekend of February 13-14 will be packed with excitement, featuring the Encuentro Insular de Murgas Infantiles, a concert by Joseph Fonseca, and the Concurso Insular de Murgas. On February 15, residents will be treated to one of the most exhilarating days filled with the Carnaval de Día and the XXVI Regata de Achipencos.

As the carnival moves into its second week, the spotlight will be on the dazzling galas: the Gala Adulta on February 16, the Gala Infantil on February 17, and the Gala de la Gran Dama on February 18. The festivities will continue with the Sambódromo and Noche Joven on February 20, culminating in the grand Cabalgata on February 21.

The celebration will reach its emotional climax on February 22, featuring the poignant Entierro de la Sardina and the extravagant Gran Gala Drag.

A Toast to Collaboration

The presentation also served to highlight the crucial role of the carnival’s heralds, the Association of Dance Schools of Fuerteventura (ACED), who expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them to announce the festivities. Their secretary, Laura García, elegantly encapsulated the essence of Carnival’s spirit, stating, “Dance is color, joy, and Carnival, and the magic is created when people dance, transforming the streets into a grand stage.”

With both excitement and anticipation in the air, Puerto del Rosario is set for a Carnival to remember, filled with imagination, community participation, and plentiful opportunities to dance, laugh, and revel in a festival that celebrates life in all its colors.
