Fuerteventura’s Tourism Action Plan for 2025: A Path to Sustainable Excellence
Fuerteventura, one of the jewels of the Canary Islands, is stepping into the future with a solid action plan aimed at enhancing its appeal as a top-tier tourist destination. During a recent session, the Council of the Tourism Board of Fuerteventura convened to approve a comprehensive Action Plan for 2025. This initiative is part of the broader Strategic Tourism Plan (PET 2022-2026) and outlines key axes and actions that will elevate the promotion and excellence of Fuerteventura as a destination.
A Strategic Commitment to the “Blue Destination”
The council members have unanimously endorsed a strategic commitment to promote Fuerteventura as a “Blue Destination,” emphasizing sustainable tourism characterized by the integration of the Orange Economy or social criteria. President Lola García remarked on this initiative as not merely a promotional tactic but as a vital approach to enhance tourist spending and stimulate sustainable local development. This ensures that the benefits of tourism trickle down to local communities, allowing them to flourish amid the thriving visitor economy.
Innovation and Sustainability at the Forefront
García underscored the importance of innovation and sustainability in Fuerteventura’s tourism strategy. The aim is to enrich the local economy while also valuing the island’s ethnographic heritage. She advocates for the renovation of existing structures instead of new constructions, recognizing the significance of maintaining Fuerteventura’s unique historical and cultural identity.
Collaborating with the Tourism Sector
Marlene Figueroa, the Island’s Tourism Counselor, echoed García’s sentiments. She emphasized that Fuerteventura is on a promising trajectory, supported by positive tourism data and effective coordination with the tourism sector. “Sustainability is our priority,” she stated, alluding to efforts focused on enhancing natural resources, local culture, and community heritage. Moreover, she pointed out that the benefits of tourism must positively influence the local economy, ensuring that local vendors and service providers thrive.
Improving Working Conditions in Tourism
Figueroa also highlighted a significant aspect of this plan: enhancing working conditions within the tourism sector. This improvement is essential for attracting and retaining talent while ensuring that the hardworking individuals behind the island’s appeal receive the recognition and dignity they deserve.
Four Strategic Axes of the 2025 Action Plan
The 2025 Action Plan, fully backed by the council, is organized around four key axes:
-
Governance and Excellence in Tourism Management: Establishing a coherent governance system that promotes excellence is crucial for maintaining high standards in tourism.
-
Product and Experience Development: This involves creating diverse and enriching experiences tailored to varied tourist interests, enhancing Fuerteventura’s unique offerings.
-
Marketing and Promotion Initiatives: A strong focus on innovative marketing strategies to reach potential visitors and communicate the value of the destination effectively.
-
Adapting Offerings to Market Trends: Regular adjustments to tourism offerings ensure alignment with evolving tourist preferences and demands.
Expanding the “Blue Destination” Concept
Central to this action plan is the innovative promotion of Fuerteventura as a Blue Destination. This concept encompasses multiple product clubs targeting specific tourist segments, including gastronomy, interior tourism, sports, nature exploration, tranquil island experiences, and even stargazing initiatives, such as the Starlight observations.
Enhancing Air Connectivity and Strategic Partnerships
In addition to product development, the action plan focuses on improving medium to long-term air connectivity. Furthermore, strategic relationships with tour operators, airlines, and travel agencies are vital for reaching market segments aligned with Fuerteventura’s offerings, ultimately aiming to enhance tourist spending and engagement.
Establishing a Tourist Observatory
This year also marks a significant milestone with the establishment of a Tourist Observatory in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). This initiative will serve as a valuable tool for assessing the evolution of tourist demand, providing updated data and reports that will inform decision-making and enhance the destination’s reputation in key markets.
The First Symposium on Sustainable Development
To further align its objectives, Fuerteventura will host its first Sustainable Development Symposium on June 19 and 20 this year. This event will bring together leading tourism experts and authorities to discuss sustainable strategies that extend beyond 2023, ultimately crafting a viable proposal for the future of tourism in the region.
The future of Fuerteventura looks bright, with the Action Plan for 2025 laying the groundwork for a sustainable, innovative, and vibrant tourism sector that values both its visitors and its local community.
