Lara Moloney: Pioneering Women in Tech in Malaga
In just two and a half years, Lara Moloney has emerged as a prominent figure in the vibrant tech landscape of Malaga, Spain. Originally from Birmingham, Lara has not only established her own business development company, Moloney & Co, but she also founded the Female Founders Circle (FFC) in September 2025. This community aims to unite both international and local women entrepreneurs, particularly those in the tech sector, fostering collaboration and support.
The Birth of the Female Founders Circle
The FFC serves as a vital network for women who are building businesses in Malaga. It provides a platform for sharing experiences, resources, and opportunities. Lara’s vision for the FFC is to create a meaningful community that adds value to both local and international women in business. With a growing membership of 279, the FFC has already hosted several events, catering to members in both English and Spanish.
A Journey to Malaga
Lara’s journey to Malaga began in 2019 when she and her family first visited the city. They were initially considering relocating to the Marbella and Estepona areas but ultimately fell in love with Malaga and the Axarquía region. However, their plans were delayed due to the Covid pandemic. After spending eight months traveling through Asia, the family decided to settle in Malaga in 2024, seeking a lifestyle change and a warmer climate.
Embracing the Local Culture
Since moving to Malaga, Lara and her family have embraced the local culture, including the late-night lifestyle typical of the region. She describes enjoying evenings at the beach, often until midnight. The family has established connections and friendships, integrating into both Spanish and international communities.
Building a Meaningful Community
Lara’s extensive experience in the tech industry—over 25 years—positions her well to support other women in business. She has worked in various sectors, including creative industries and women’s organizations, and is passionate about helping others succeed. At 43, Lara feels she has a significant portion of her career ahead of her and is eager to contribute her knowledge to the local community.
Collaborating with Inception Woman Lab
In addition to the FFC, Lara is collaborating with Inception Woman Lab, a boutique venture studio program designed to support high-potential tech startups led by women. This partnership aligns with her goal of fostering a thriving ecosystem for female entrepreneurs in Malaga.
The Tech Landscape in Malaga
One of the key attractions for Lara in relocating to Malaga was its rapidly evolving technology sector. She was aware of multinational companies like Vodafone and Google planning to open offices in the city, which indicated a promising future for tech professionals. This environment offers both Lara and her husband, Fred—an engineer and programmer—the continuity they sought in their careers.
Health Considerations and Lifestyle Changes
Lara also has personal reasons for seeking a warmer climate. She has lived with juvenile idiopathic arthritis since the age of 11, and the sunshine in Malaga plays a significant role in her well-being. Although she is currently in remission, the climate remains an important factor in her family’s quality of life.
The Growth of the Female Founders Circle
Since its inception, the FFC has quickly grown, with members from diverse backgrounds. Approximately 15% of the members are international, hailing from countries such as Canada, the USA, Singapore, and various parts of Europe. This diversity reflects Malaga’s status as a burgeoning tech hub, with members evolving alongside the city’s growth.
Navigating the Challenges of AI
Lara is keenly aware of the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the business landscape. She believes that those who learn to use AI effectively will ultimately succeed. Lara emphasizes the importance of integrating the right tools into business practices and ensuring that teams understand how to utilize them effectively.
Language Learning and Cultural Integration
While Lara faces the challenge of improving her Spanish, she is committed to learning the language. Her daughter, however, has adapted quickly, picking up local dialects and nuances. Lara attends Spanish events and has made local friends, further embedding her family into the community.
A Bright Future in Malaga
The Moloney family sees their future in Malaga, particularly in the Axarquía region. They enjoy hiking in the mountains and exploring the beauty of Spain, all while becoming part of the local fabric. Lara’s work with the FFC and her commitment to empowering women in tech exemplify her dedication to building a supportive community in this vibrant city.
