Celebrating Craftsmanship: The XXXVII Feria Insular de Artesanía in Fuerteventura
A Highlight for Local Artisans
The XXXVII Feria Insular de Artesanía, set to take place from May 7 to 10, promises to be a remarkable showcase of talent and tradition. According to the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, this event serves as the grand culmination of a year-long dedication from local artisans. This annual fair not only highlights the creativity and craftsmanship of Fuerteventura’s artisans but also fosters a deeper appreciation for their skills and the cultural heritage they represent.
Investment in Tradition
During her visit to the event preparations, Lola García expressed the commitment of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, which has allocated €100,000 to support the fair. This investment underscores the importance of the festival on both an insular and regional scale. The logistics and organizational efforts provided by the Cabildo are critical, especially when considering the rich history of the event, which originated nearly 40 years ago through the initiatives of the Colectivo Mafasca. Their vision has paved the way for more than 200 artisans to come together, showcasing their diverse creations.
Support for Artisans Year-Round
Lolina Negrín, the Councillor of Crafts, emphasized the fair’s significance in promoting the local artisan sector. The Cabildo supports artisans throughout the year, offering aid for the promotion and commercialization of traditional products. With funding reaching up to €200,000, these initiatives ensure that local craftspeople receive the recognition and resources they need. Furthermore, the ongoing program EnRedArte continues to be a benchmark for education, enhancing the skills of both the general public and students interested in artisan trades.
Collaborative Efforts with Local Authorities
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is collaboratively working with the Ayuntamiento de Antigua to finalize arrangements for the fair. Key figures including the mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, and the cultural councilor, Jonathan Peña, were present during the recent site visit, alongside Margarita de Vera from the Colectivo Mafasca. Their unified efforts are a testament to the community’s collective commitment to preserving and showcasing the island’s artisanal heritage.
A Focus on Traditional Hat-Making
This year, the institutional stand of the Councillor of Crafts will feature a special focus on traditional majorera hat-making. Visitors will have the opportunity to see a curated selection of pieces from the ethnographic collection, alongside hats crafted by students of the traditional hat-making course offered through the EnRedArte program. This initiative aims to revive and elevate this historical craft, allowing visitors to appreciate techniques such as the use of palm and wheat straw, and various hat styles, decorations, and accessories that define the local artisan landscape.
A Tribute to a Craft Legacy
In addition to the various exhibits, the fair will also honor a central figure in the world of Fuerteventura crafts—master cabinetmaker José Melián Martín. On Friday, May 8, at 18:00, the Councillor of Crafts will present a project dedicated to the inventory and cataloging of Melián’s work at the Centro de Juventud. This initiative demonstrates a profound respect for craft legacies and the importance of preserving the artistic narratives that shape the island’s cultural identity.
Invitation to Experience Artistry
Both Lola García and Lolina Negrín warmly invite the public to join in the festivities from May 7 to 10. The Feria Insular de Artesanía is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and the enduring spirit of craftsmanship that defines Fuerteventura’s vibrant culture.
