Antigua Considers Relocating Nightlife Venues Outside the Tourist and Residential Area of Caleta de Fuste

Reassessing Nightlife: Ensuring Safety in Caleta de Fuste

The Ayuntamiento de Antigua is currently exploring a significant shift in the nightlife landscape of Caleta de Fuste, driven by safety concerns. At a recent meeting of the Junta Local de Seguridad, officials underscored that most incidents of violence and crime are concentrated in nightlife venues located in tourist and residential areas. As a proactive response, the council is considering drafting a report to relocate bars and nightclubs away from these zones.

Safety Statistics Reflect Improvement

During the meeting, which involved key local figures such as Mayor Matías Peña and representatives from the Guardia Civil and the local police, officials highlighted a distinct improvement in overall public safety within the municipality. Official data indicates a reduction in crime rates compared to the previous year, particularly in Caleta de Fuste, where incidents have seen a marked decline.

Focus on Nightlife Concerns

Despite the positive trend in general safety, the council observed that specific areas—especially nightlife venues—are hotspots for violence and disturbances. The Ayuntamiento has identified these establishments as primary contributors to the higher-than-average levels of criminal activity in the area. The goal of relocating such venues is to facilitate a safer environment not just for residents, but also for tourists visiting the beautiful coastal region.

A Unified Approach to Security

The meeting’s attendees discussed the 100% resolution rate of cases involving violence recorded in 2025, which reflects effective law enforcement strategies in place. With the cooperation of the local police and national security bodies, all reported violent acts witnessed prompt police action resulting in the apprehension of suspects.

Moreover, the local police forces are actively involved in monitoring the municipality, primarily through a sophisticated network of over 40 traffic surveillance cameras, most of which are concentrated in Caleta de Fuste. These cameras are pivotal in supporting the safety protocols as their footage can be made available for investigations when required.

Collaborative Efforts with Local Businesses

Mayor Matías Peña emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ayuntamiento and local business owners, particularly those in tourism and hospitality. Entrepreneurs have expressed their willingness to enhance security measures, including hiring private security, defining private areas for clientele, and improving surveillance systems. This collaborative approach seeks to create a seamless blend of safety and enjoyment for all who visit and live in the area.

Comprehensive Policing and Support Services

In addition to local policing efforts, the Policía Canaria is engaged in providing similar services across Fuerteventura. They primarily focus on preventive patrols and assist with security during community events, ensuring a cohesive relationship with local law enforcement.

The city is not only striving for a safe environment but fostering a community where visitors can enjoy the vibrant nightlife without compromising their safety. By actively addressing the concerns related to nightlife venues and collaborating with local businesses, the Ayuntamiento de Antigua is poised to implement solutions that align with both public safety and the area’s reputation as a tourist destination.
