Countdown to the New Funeral Home in Antigua
The long-awaited funeral home in Antigua is about to become a reality. After years of advocacy from the community, the town hall, in collaboration with the Padrón family, has officially announced that construction for this vital service will begin in 2026.
Architectural Vision
The new funeral home represents the fourth establishment for the Padrón family in Fuerteventura, and its design is thoughtfully created to integrate seamlessly into the landscape. The architectural plan emphasizes sustainability, featuring environmentally friendly materials and renewable energy sources throughout its construction. This consideration for the environment highlights a modern, conscientious approach to development within the municipality.
Facilities and Services
The upcoming facility promises to offer multiple independent and comfortable viewing rooms, each designed with respect for the families who will use them. In addition to these rooms, the funeral home will include a chapel, a spacious foyer, and a visitor lounge. Essential services will also be provided, featuring restrooms and specialized areas like a mortuary preparation room as well as a cremation area. This range of services aims to ensure that families can access all necessary arrangements in a single, dignified location.
Investment and Planning
Significant investment has been made to facilitate this project. The Antigua Town Council has allocated €268,000, focusing specifically on resolving land use issues that have delayed the project for years. This administrative process, which began four years ago, was undertaken in careful coordination with the Padrón family, who already serve communities in Puerto del Rosario, La Oliva, and Gran Tarajal.
Local Impact
Mayor Matías Peña has emphasized the importance of this project for the community, highlighting its potential to modernize essential services in Antigua. He stated, “We put an end to a long, complex administrative process related to land ownership, achieving a consensus that paves the way for a project that will provide families a dignified and intimate space within their own town.”
This development is not just a matter of building a new facility; it’s a commitment to providing families with a space for reflection and remembrance that respects their needs and wishes.
A Broader Commitment
The Padrón family is also dedicated to enhancing local services beyond the new funeral home. They are in the process of constructing Fuerteventura’s first crematorium for pets in Puerto del Rosario, demonstrating a commitment to providing thoughtful services for all members of the community, human or otherwise. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for compassionate care for our beloved animal companions.
Through these endeavors, both the town council and the Padrón family are working together to enrich the community’s resources and ensure residents have access to essential services in their times of need. In a world where life and loss are inevitable, the creation of such respectful spaces is more important than ever.
