Mercadona’s New ‘Tienda 9’ Supermarket – A Fresh Experience in Fuerteventura

Introduction to the ‘Tienda 9’

Mercadona, a popular supermarket chain in Spain, has recently launched its innovative ‘Tienda 9’ model in Fuerteventura. This new store is located at Calle Los Alisios, 11 in Puerto del Rosario, marking an exciting addition to the island’s shopping landscape. The transformation of this location required a substantial investment of €6.5 million, demonstrating Mercadona’s commitment to enhancing the shopping experience for local customers.

A Space Designed for Fresh Products

One of the most striking aspects of the new ‘Tienda 9’ is the increased space dedicated to fresh products. Customers can expect to find a wider selection of fruits, vegetables, meats, and baked goods, all displayed in a manner that invites exploration. The store’s layout has been significantly improved, creating a more intuitive shopping journey. The goal is to facilitate quicker, more comfortable purchases, allowing shoppers to find what they need with ease.

Staff and Operations

Boasting a team of 87 dedicated employees, the supermarket operates from 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM Monday through Saturday. The new organization of the store not only enhances the customer experience but also improves operations for the staff. With a focus on reducing unnecessary travel during restocking, the new design promotes better coordination among the teams working within the supermarket.

The Layout Transformation

The interior of the supermarket has undergone a complete transformation. Previously arranged by business categories, the store now follows a process-oriented model. This significant overhaul is designed to simplify product location for customers, leading to a smoother shopping experience. Such an efficient structure allows employees to work more effectively, optimizing how they serve the community.

Introducing the Central Bakery

One of the standout features of the new ‘Tienda 9’ is the inclusion of the Central Bakery. This area consolidates the preparation of fresh products such as slicing, cooking, and packaging. By centralizing these processes, Mercadona reinforces the quality and freshness of their offerings while creating more space in the aisles for shoppers to freely browse.

Sustainability Efforts

Sustainability has been a key focus in the redesign of the supermarket. Mercadona highlights that this new model has the potential to save up to 10% in energy consumption and 40% in water resources. The installation of Aerofoil systems in refrigeration units minimizes cold air loss, resulting in a more energy-efficient environment while also enhancing customer comfort.

Efficient Parking and Customer Amenities

The new supermarket is equipped with 260 parking spaces, including 8 designated for electric vehicles. This thoughtful inclusion reflects modern consumer needs and encourages environmentally-friendly transportation methods. The store also features a customer lounge area, providing a comfortable place for shoppers to take a break.

Future Expansion Plans

The launch of ‘Tienda 9’ in Fuerteventura is part of a broader initiative to transition from the previous ‘Tienda 8’ model. Mercadona plans to operate approximately 60 ‘Tienda 9’ supermarkets across Spain by the end of 2026, with a total investment of €3.7 billion projected for this transformation, which will continue until 2033.

Enhanced Grocery Shopping Experience

For the residents of Fuerteventura, the opening of the new ‘Tienda 9’ translates to a more prominent focus on fresh products and a smoother shopping experience. While the supermarket enhances its infrastructure and services, it remains committed to its longstanding philosophy of Siempre Precios Bajos (Always Low Prices), ensuring that customers continue to receive excellent value as they embrace these upgrades.

With these exciting changes, Mercadona is all set to redefine grocery shopping on the island.
