A New Era for Puerto del Rosario: Fishing Market Development
The local government of Puerto del Rosario has recently taken a monumental step in revitalizing its fishing sector through a preliminary agreement with the Port Authority. This agreement marks a significant moment for the municipality, signaling a commitment to enhancing local fisheries by establishing a dedicated fish market.
In a pivotal meeting held at the municipal offices, key figures gathered to discuss this initiative. The meeting was attended by Mayor David de Vera, Primary Sector Councilor David de León, Port Authority Director Fran Trujillo, Delegate in Fuerteventura Gustavo C. Quintero, President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura Lola García, and several professional fishermen from the local Fishermen’s Brotherhood of Corralejo.
This agreement is groundbreaking as it will provide Puerto del Rosario with permanent, professional facilities that aim to elevate artisanal and multi-purpose fishing. The collaborative infrastructure project between the municipality and the Port Authority offers an exciting opportunity to diversify the local economy, ultimately solidifying the primary sector as a key driver of employment and wealth creation.
The proposed building will feature various spaces dedicated to crucial functions such as receiving, weighing, handling, preserving, tracking, and initially selling the fish. Essential facilities like a fish market and sales area, storage rooms, offices, restrooms, as well as refrigeration and freezing units, will be incorporated into the design. The Government of the Canary Islands is also on board, providing a direct grant of €150,000 for the development of this vital infrastructure.
Mayor David de Vera emphasized the landmark nature of this agreement, saying, “Today is a key day for the future of our municipality. For the first time, fishermen from Puerto del Rosario will have dignified and permanent facilities that value their skills and trades. This market will not only improve the conditions for fish commercialization but also strongly positions us for economic diversification and job creation in our community. We will continue to work closely with the Port Authority and other stakeholders to turn this project into reality.”
David de León, the councilor for the primary sector, also underlined the importance of institutional cooperation, stating, “We have driven this initiative with the conviction that artisanal fishing is a fundamental pillar for the economic development of Puerto del Rosario. This preliminary agreement with the Port Authority is the result of dialogue and collaborative efforts with sector professionals. Moreover, this market will complement the first-sales position at the municipal market, ensuring a holistic management strategy that benefits both fishermen and consumers. We are grateful for the involvement of Fran Trujillo, Gustavo C. Quintero, and President Lola García, along with all the representatives from the Port Authority’s board, because without this teamwork, we couldn’t solidify initiatives that generate wealth and employment in the primary sector.”
The agreement sets the stage for the consolidation of professional initiatives in the primary sector, particularly within fishing, as a sustainable economic alternative for the municipality. This new market, supported by the collaboration of the municipality, Port Authority, Cabildo de Fuerteventura, and the Government of the Canary Islands, is poised to become a cornerstone for the future of artisanal fishing in the capital of Fuerteventura.
