Enhancements in Healthcare: Upgrading the Morro Jable Health Center

On April 14, 2025, the Government of the Canary Islands announced an exciting development in the field of healthcare. The Health Ministry, through the General Directorate of Economic Resources, unveiled plans for the refurbishment of the Morro Jable Health Center in the municipality of Pájara. This initiative represents a significant investment of €186,446, inclusive of taxes, with a projected timeline of four months for implementation.

Understanding the Morro Jable Health Center

The Morro Jable Health Center is a vital part of the Basic Health Zone (Zona Básica de Salud, ZBS) for the peninsula of Jandía, which also encompasses regions like Esquinzo, Mal Nombre, Piedras Caídas, Punta Jandía, Solana del Matorral, and Costa Calma. This health center serves a substantial community, currently catering to a total of 17,470 health cards, underscoring its importance for the local population.

Planned Improvements to Facilities

The plans for upgrading the Morro Jable Health Center include several vital enhancements aimed at improving service delivery. Key features of the refurbishment will involve rehabilitating the façade, renewing evacuation signage, creating a designated sleep zone for ambulances, and adding a pergola to the parking area. These changes respond to the specific needs of Fuerteventura’s healthcare sector amidst a growing population.

Structural Layout and Services Offered

Spanning a total of 2,300 square meters across two interconnected floors, the Morro Jable Health Center is designed to accommodate various medical services effectively. The facility houses an admissions area, administrative offices, and archival spaces.

In addition, it features a dedicated adult care area with 16 family medicine and nursing consultations, ensuring that adults receive comprehensive and timely medical attention. For the younger members of the community, the center dedicates four pediatric consultations and nursing facilities, highlighting its commitment to childhood health.

Specialized Healthcare Areas

Furthermore, the Morro Jable Health Center includes a Bucodental Attention area with facilities for dental consultation and hygiene, which is crucial for promoting oral health in the community.

Moreover, the center is equipped with a women’s care area featuring a midwifery consultation and a childbirth preparation room, complete with appropriate waiting areas and restrooms. This highlights a progressive approach to women’s health and family support services.

Additional Facility Features

On top of these specialized medical areas, the Morro Jable Health Center houses a variety of other essential spaces. These include meeting rooms for staff collaborations, a library to support health education, and various storage, archives, and staff locker areas. These features not only make the day-to-day activities more efficient but also improve the overall work environment for healthcare professionals.

Meeting Community Health Needs

With this extensive refurbishment, the Morro Jable Health Center is poised to enhance its capacity to meet the healthcare needs of the growing community effectively. The upgrades are not just an investment in infrastructure but an investment in the quality of healthcare services available to residents, ensuring that as populations grow, healthcare stays accessible and effective.

The move reflects a proactive approach by the regional government to adapt and improve healthcare infrastructure to better serve its citizens, thereby enhancing the overall well-being of the Canary Islands’ residents.
