Fire Moves Towards Bordeaux
In a concerning turn of events, French authorities have ordered the evacuation of towns near the southwestern city of Bordeaux as wildfires advance towards the area. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of residents as the flames threaten to engulf more land. The Gironde department, where Bordeaux is situated, has become a focal point of emergency response efforts.
To facilitate access for emergency services, the traffic information website Bison Futé has advised drivers to avoid certain roads in the region. This strategic move is crucial for enabling firefighters and rescue teams to navigate the affected areas swiftly and effectively.
More Evacuations in Spain
Meanwhile, the situation in Spain has escalated dramatically. Approximately 63,000 people have been evacuated or instructed to stay indoors in the Madrid region due to the relentless spread of wildfires. The interior ministry reported these figures late Friday, highlighting the severity of the crisis.
Major NASA Site Hit
The wildfires have not only impacted local communities but have also forced NASA to evacuate one of its critical global deep space communications facilities in Spain. The Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex (MDSCC), located about 37 miles west of central Madrid, is vital for the agency’s ability to communicate with space probes exploring distant parts of the galaxy.
A NASA spokesperson confirmed that the wildfire had passed through the MDSCC, and while all personnel were safely evacuated, the extent of potential damage will be assessed when conditions allow. The MDSCC is part of the Deep Space Network, which includes two other sites in Canberra, Australia, and Goldstone, California, ensuring that NASA can maintain communication with its spacecraft.
“The safety and well-being of our personnel is our highest priority,” the agency stated, expressing solidarity with the families and neighbors affected by the wildfires.
France Sends Troops
In response to the escalating crisis, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the deployment of around 500 additional soldiers to support the firefighters battling the blazes in southwest France. EU Planes Deployed
In a show of solidarity, the European Union has responded to the crisis by deploying four specialized water-bombing planes to Spain and three to France. This assistance comes after both countries requested help in combating the wildfires that threaten lives and property.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has characterized the situation as “dramatic,” emphasizing that his government has mobilized all available resources to combat the fires. “We are living through a dramatic situation, not only in various Spanish provinces but also in regions of neighboring countries,” he stated on social media platform X.
