Building rockets at scale requires more than just a vast assembly floor; it demands a comprehensive ecosystem that integrates manufacturing, research, logistics, and worker services. PLD Space’s proposed campus in Elche, Spain, aims to create such an environment. Spanning approximately 178 acres, this ambitious project resembles a small industrial town more than a conventional factory, reflecting the company’s commitment to revolutionizing aerospace production.

With an initial investment of around $74 million, based on the European Central Bank’s exchange rate from July 22, the proposal is currently under public review. The Valencian government is considering designating it as a “Project of Regional Interest,” indicating that while the plans are promising, they are not yet finalized. The scale of the project underscores PLD Space’s serious intent to transition from one-off demonstrations to repeat rocket production, a significant leap in the aerospace industry.

A Factory Built for Scale

The first phase of the Elche campus will feature an industrial building exceeding 1.02 million square feet. This expansive facility will be complemented by nearly 269,000 square feet dedicated to corporate offices, technical facilities, green spaces, and parking for over 1,600 vehicles, some of which will be sheltered by solar canopies. This thoughtful design is crucial for accommodating the production, integration, and storage of launch vehicles ranging from 98 to 262 feet in length.

Additionally, an auxiliary systems building of approximately 285,000 square feet will support heavy machinery and high-performance equipment, featuring an open ground level to facilitate the movement of large trucks. Special construction measures will be implemented to mitigate noise, vibration, and other disturbances that could disrupt precision aerospace work, ensuring a conducive environment for innovation.

Why Elche Makes Sense

The chosen site in Les Vallongues is strategically located near Alicante-Elche Airport, major highways, universities, and an established business corridor. While these connections may not be as thrilling as a rocket launch, they are vital for the seamless transportation of oversized vehicle sections, specialized machinery, and sensitive components, minimizing the risk of delays caused by everyday traffic.

Moreover, PLD Space envisions a collaborative ecosystem where offices, laboratories, production, integration, logistics, and training are all interconnected. This approach aims to attract engineers, suppliers, and vocational programs to cluster around the factory, fostering a vibrant aerospace community rather than having talent scattered across various regions.

Thousands of Jobs Are Projected

Public documents estimate that the construction phase could generate 713 direct jobs and approximately 1,700 induced positions in sectors like transportation, services, and logistics. Once operational, the facility is projected to create between 500 and 2,000 direct jobs, with the potential for up to 4,000 indirect roles throughout the aerospace supply chain.

This broad range of employment projections highlights the uncertainty inherent in planning. The final numbers will depend on various factors, including launch demand, production rates, and the completion of all three phases of development. Even the lower estimates would position the campus as a significant source of technical employment in the Alicante-Elche area.

More Than an Assembly Line

One of the standout features of the campus is an early childhood center dedicated to the children of campus personnel. This facility, spanning roughly 4,650 square feet, will include four classrooms designed for up to 66 children aged one to three, along with shared spaces for dining and outdoor play. This thoughtful addition reflects the company’s understanding of the challenges faced by working parents in the aerospace sector.

By providing on-site childcare, PLD Space aims to alleviate some of the pressures on its workforce, recognizing that a long engineering shift becomes significantly more challenging without reliable childcare options. Additionally, a temporary worker residence is planned for a later phase, catering to specialists who may need to relocate for shorter assignments.

The development will also incorporate sports areas, solar roofs, sustainable drainage systems, on-site water treatment, and water reuse initiatives. While these features may not eliminate the factory’s utility demands, they will help reduce pressure on local resources and enhance the site’s resilience as production scales up.

From MIURA 1 to MIURA 5

PLD Space demonstrated its capabilities in October 2023 with the successful launch of MIURA 1, marking what is considered the first private European rocket launch. This milestone provided the company’s engineers with invaluable real-world experience in design, manufacturing, and operations.

The next challenge is significantly larger: MIURA 5, a two-stage reusable orbital launcher designed to carry small payloads. The transition to producing this vehicle at scale necessitates a fundamentally different industrial setup. While rocket launches capture public attention, the true measure of commercial success lies in quality control, logistics, and a reliable supply chain.

The Elche proposal is not merely about constructing a single rocket; it is about establishing a robust infrastructure that will enable PLD Space to evolve from a successful technology demonstrator to a leader in serial production, with the flexibility to accommodate larger vehicles and future programs.

The Project Still Faces Approvals

The Valencian government has initiated a one-month public consultation period, during which technical and legal reports will be prepared, followed by a potential vote by the regional cabinet. PLD Space’s timeline suggests that construction could commence in 2027, although this is contingent on obtaining the necessary permits and approvals.

If the schedule remains on track, the complex will be developed in three phases, with subsequent stages adding industrial capacity, office space, and worker housing. While rockets may dominate the headlines, the real challenge lies in building them reliably and efficiently, time and time again.
