The renovation officially began when the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing, and Food Sovereignty of the Canary Islands Government signed a replanning act. This act was formalized between the ministry, the public company Gestur Canarias, and the construction entity Obras Públicas Canarias S.L. The signing event was attended by key officials including Narvay Quintero, the regional minister; Lola García, the president of the Fuerteventura Island Council; and various representatives from local fishing and construction sectors.

Minister Quintero emphasized that this initiative addresses longstanding demands from the northern fishing sector of Fuerteventura. He acknowledged the need to modernize and refurbish facilities to meet the operational requirements of marine professionals. With an investment of €200,000, the project aims to provide necessary improvements that will significantly impact the local fishing community.

Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Island Council, pointed out that the primary sector in the region faces structural challenges due to double insularity and rising global costs. During a guided tour of the facilities, Héctor Pérez, the technical director of Gestur Canarias, discussed the gradual deterioration of the fishing dock caused by environmental exposure and the passage of time. This backdrop establishes the urgency and necessity of the current renovations.

Scope of Renovation Work

The renovation works, projected to last for two months, focus on repairing infrastructural damages, enhancing safety, and optimizing conditions for initial sales and handling of fish products. Key aspects of the project include:

• Comprehensive Repairs: The renovation will involve restoring the breakwater using specialized coatings designed to withstand harsh marine environments.

• Resurfacing: Approximately 2,000 square meters of the dock will be repaved to improve usability.

• Fuel Storage Upgrade: The current 5,000-liter fuel storage unit will be replaced with a new 10,000-liter tank that meets modern safety and environmental standards, equipped with necessary protective features.

• Infrastructure Enhancements: Additionally, the project will include installing new doors on the floating docks, creating a pathway to the fisher’s facilities, and updating signage, furniture, and equipment throughout the site.

Collaborative Government Efforts

In late 2025, the Council of Government approved the declaration of economic urgency to execute a credit expansion aimed at funding these vital infrastructure improvements. This decision resulted from cooperative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works, highlighting a unified approach to support the area’s economic resilience.
