Canarian Students to Name Submarine Fibre Optic Cables Connecting the Islands
In a unique blend of education and technology, Canalink, a company under the Cabildo of Tenerife, has launched an exciting competition titled ‘Connect with the Submarine Fibre Optic Cables of the Canary Islands’. This initiative invites secondary school students from various islands to suggest names for the new submarine cabling systems that will enhance connectivity across the archipelago.
Engaging the Youth
The competition is designed to take place in educational institutions across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The primary goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the geographical, cultural, and technological contexts surrounding these vital infrastructures. By involving students, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the strategic importance of submarine cables, which serve as critical links for island connectivity.
Juan José Martínez, the Councillor for Research, Development, and Innovation at the Cabildo of Tenerife, emphasized the dual purpose of the initiative. He stated, “The initiative combines technological innovation with educational participation, allowing students to actively engage in a strategic project for the archipelago.” This approach not only educates but also empowers young minds to contribute to significant infrastructural developments.
The Infrastructure Challenge
The competition specifically invites name proposals for three major submarine cable systems:
- The cable system connecting Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.
- The cable linking Tenerife and El Hierro.
- The future branch connecting Fuerteventura with Tarfaya in Morocco.
Each proposal must adhere to specific guidelines: participants are required to suggest an original name of no more than three words, provide a conceptual justification for their choice, and include its proper pronunciation. If applicable, they should also indicate the original language of the name.
Submission Guidelines
Educational institutions are allowed to submit a maximum of four proposals, with each proposal containing three name ideas corresponding to the three cable systems. The submissions must be sent digitally to a designated email address within 30 business days of the official announcement. This structured approach ensures that students can collaborate and brainstorm effectively, fostering teamwork and creativity.
Rewards for Participation
To incentivize participation, the competition offers attractive rewards. The winning educational center will receive a prize of €6,000, which is earmarked for the improvement and equipping of technological resources. Additionally, the student whose proposal is selected will be awarded an iPad or an equivalent device, making the competition not only a learning experience but also a chance for tangible rewards.
Evaluation Criteria
The proposals will be evaluated anonymously based on several criteria, including originality, connection to Canarian identity, coherence with the Canalink brand, ease of international pronunciation, and legal viability. This thorough evaluation process ensures that the selected names reflect both creativity and cultural significance, aligning with the broader goals of the initiative.
By engaging students in this innovative project, Canalink is not only enhancing the technological landscape of the Canary Islands but also nurturing a sense of community and identity among the youth. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of education and collaboration in shaping the future of island connectivity.
