The ‘monster’ of the wipes causes a “serious blockage” in Fuerteventura

This week, employees of Canaragua, the water management company, were called to intervene on Tajo Street in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, due to a serious blockage in the municipal sanitation system. This issue arose from a significant accumulation of wet wipes that residents had improperly disposed of in toilets. To address the problem, workers dug a trench approximately six meters long to access the affected pipe and restore normal service.

Unlike toilet paper, these types of waste do not disintegrate in water, leading to blockages that result in malfunctions, unpleasant odors, and damage to the wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, they contribute to environmental contamination. The situation underscores the importance of proper waste disposal and highlights the detrimental effects of irresponsible habits among the population.

Institutional Coordination for Resolving the Issue

The work was carried out by Canaragua in collaboration with the Municipal Services Department. This coordinated approach emphasizes the need for teamwork in tackling public service challenges and ensuring the community’s needs are met efficiently.

David de Vera, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, issued a call for civic responsibility. He stressed, “Incidents like this can be avoided with small actions. Throwing wipes in the toilet not only causes blockages like the one on Tajo Street but also jeopardizes our entire municipal sanitation system, which we are working hard to modernize. I urge everyone to be conscious: wipes belong in the bin.”

In addition, David de León, the municipal services councilor, explained the serious consequences of such practices. “These blockages are not mere inconveniences. When wet wipes and other waste accumulate in the network, they can damage pumping stations and the treatment plant itself, leading to repair costs that everyone bears. More importantly, they cause environmental harm. From the council, we remind people that the toilet is not a bin.”

Recommendations for Citizens

The local government reminds residents of the importance of not disposing of wet wipes, hygiene products, or other waste in toilets. These should always be placed in the trash bin. A call for civic awareness and responsibility is crucial to prevent future incidents and reduce the environmental impact that such practices have on sanitation networks and the natural environment.

The new sanitation contract awarded to Canaragua, which includes a 24/7 emergency service available 365 days a year, has enabled a rapid and effective response to this incident. This proactive measure ensures the community’s sanitation needs are adequately addressed, showcasing the commitment to maintaining public health and environmental standards.
