This week, Morro Jable transforms into a vibrant hub of pride and diversity as it gears up for the much-anticipated Jandía Pride celebration. Running from May 14 to 18, the festivities unfold in the picturesque Plaza de los Pescadores. This colorful event, organized by the Asociación Faro de Jandía in collaboration with the Pájara City Council, has garnered support from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Altihay community, firmly positioning it on the map of LGTBI+ celebrations in the Canary Islands.

An Exciting Kick-Off

The excitement surrounding Jandía Pride was palpable during the event’s presentation held at Hotel Buganvilla. Attendees included Alejandro Jorge, the mayor of Pájara, Raquel Acosta, the councilor of culture, and Carla Soto, president of Altihay. Acosta eloquently stated, “Pride is not just a celebration for the community; it’s a celebration of society as a whole.” Juanjo Martínez, the event organizer, added humor and passion to his overview of the planned activities, setting the stage for a week of inclusive celebration.

An Event Full of Festivities

The joyous programming officially kicks off on Friday, May 16, at 6:00 PM with a whimsical Heels Race led by the charismatic Isabella Ypunto. This light-hearted competition promises laughter and engagement among attendees. Following the race, the evening continues at 8:00 PM with the highly anticipated Jandía Queen Gala, hosted by Vania Vainilla. This glamorous showcase will witness performances from renowned artists such as Agoney, Azúcar Moreno, La Prohibida, Petri Clon, and Diego Delgado, ensuring a night filled with spectacular talent.

Marching for Equality

The excitement continues on Saturday, May 17, starting with the vibrant Float Parade at 5:00 PM, where creativity and joy take center stage. This colorful display will be followed by the March for the People at 8:00 PM, a significant event where Altihay will present a crucial manifesto advocating for LGTBI+ rights. The evening will culminate in the exciting Drag Queen Gala, hosted by Amor Romeira and Fruela. This gala will feature electrifying performances from a myriad of talented drag artists, including Grimarisa Maeva, Drag Gio, Drag La Tacones, Drag Lemnos, Drag Hefesto, Drag Nilo, Drag Arcux, and Drag Armek.

Live Music to Celebrate

Music will be another highlight of the event, with live performances from various esteemed artists scheduled to enchant the crowds. The lineup includes Nebulossa, Mel Ömana, Nalaya, the High Heels Performance, The Big A, and Black Flamingo. This diverse array of musical talent serves to amplify the celebratory atmosphere, drawing attendees from all walks of life.

A Growing Tradition

Since its inception, Jandía Pride has flourished thanks to the passion and commitment of young advocates working tirelessly to defend LGTBI+ rights. Over the years, it has established itself as a prominent event in Fuerteventura’s calendar. Víctor Alonso, an island councilor, expressed excitement, proclaiming, “Morro Jable is fortunate, and this event will be a benchmark at the level of the Canary Islands, Spain, and Europe.”
