Canary Islands on Flood Alert: Storm Therese Approaches
As the Canary Islands brace for the impending arrival of Storm Therese, the government has activated a pre-alert for flooding across the entire archipelago. This significant weather event is expected to bring a dangerous mix of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas, prompting officials to take precautionary measures.
Pre-Alert for Flooding
The General Directorate of Emergencies has issued the pre-alert, which will take effect from 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 18. This alert is a response to the forecasted severe weather conditions that could lead to both coastal and inland flooding. The Special Emergency Plan for Flood Risk (PEINCA) has been activated to ensure that all necessary precautions are in place.
Flood Risks Across All Islands
The pre-alert encompasses a wide range of flooding risks, affecting both coastal areas and inland regions. Authorities have emphasized that this storm could be one of the most impactful weather events the Canary Islands have faced in recent years. Existing alerts for strong winds in the western islands and Gran Canaria, as well as coastal warnings, have been heightened in anticipation of the storm.
Dangerous Sea Conditions
Coastal areas are particularly at risk, with large waves expected to crash onto promenades, coastal roads, and bathing areas. Officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, especially during high tide periods. The risk of dangerous sea conditions will be most pronounced in the two to three hours surrounding high tide, with key times identified as follows:
- Wednesday: 12:50 PM – 1:15 PM
- Thursday: 1:00 AM – 1:25 AM and 1:25 PM – 1:50 PM
- Friday: 1:35 AM – 2:00 AM and 2:00 PM – 2:25 PM
- Saturday: 2:15 AM – 2:40 AM and 2:35 PM – 3:00 PM
Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding
Storm Therese is expected to bring sustained rainfall, with heavy showers particularly affecting the mountainous regions and the northern, western, and southwestern areas of the islands. Urban areas may face a heightened risk of flash flooding, as sudden surges in ravines (barrancos) and water channels could occur. While the most severe conditions are anticipated in the higher islands, heavy downpours are also possible in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Authorities Urge Caution
Emergency services are actively monitoring the situation and have issued strong recommendations for residents and visitors. They advise avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions and staying away from coastal and flood-prone areas. With Storm Therese set to intensify, the coming days could bring significant disruption across the Canary Islands.
Community Preparedness
Local communities are encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions. This includes securing outdoor items that could be blown away by strong winds, ensuring that emergency kits are stocked with essentials, and staying informed through local news and weather updates.
As the storm approaches, the safety of residents and visitors remains the top priority for authorities. By taking proactive measures and staying informed, the community can better navigate the challenges posed by Storm Therese.
