Besa from the Aalia Team Introduces a Spanish Tapas Bar in Bondi

Besa: A New Spanish Culinary Haven in Bondi

The vibrant culinary scene in Sydney is about to get a fresh infusion of Spanish flair with the opening of Besa, the latest venture from the acclaimed team behind popular restaurants like Aalia, Nour, Henrietta, and the Aalia Wine Room. Set to open this weekend in Bondi, Besa aims to mend Sydney’s complex relationship with Spanish cuisine.

A Culinary Vision

Executive Chef Ibrahim Kasif, known for his stints at Porteno, Bodega, and Stanbuli, has long pondered why Spanish food hasn’t found its rightful place in Sydney’s diverse dining landscape. “It’s strange that this city has embraced French techniques, Middle Eastern generosity, and the flavors of Greece and Italy, yet Spanish cuisine hasn’t had its moment,” he reflects.

The Meaning Behind Besa

The name Besa, which translates to “kiss” in Spanish, symbolizes Kasif’s aspiration to breathe new life into Spanish cuisine in Sydney. He believes that Spanish food, with its rich European traditions and modern vibrancy, aligns perfectly with the city’s culinary culture. “Tapas culture is everything that Sydney loves – it’s vibrant, wine-driven, and built for conversation,” he adds.

A Flexible Dining Experience

Besa is designed to be whatever you want it to be. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual cocktail and a couple of Gildas or looking to indulge in a full dining experience, the venue welcomes all. You can explore the “picoteo” section for delightful tinned treats like Olasagasti anchovies and house-pickled South Australian sardines, or let your evening unfold with a selection of small plates and main dishes.

A Menu Full of Flavor

The menu at Besa is a culinary journey through Spain, featuring an array of small plates such as beef carpaccio, croquetas, and blue mackerel crudo. For mains, diners can savor dishes like John Dory with pil pil sauce, spiced lamb rump, or grilled chicken served with egg noodles. To finish off your meal, indulge in Basque cheesecake or churros, ensuring a sweet end to your dining experience.

Diverse Regional Inspirations

The culinary team at Besa draws inspiration from various regions of Spain, particularly Madrid and the Basque Country. Kasif notes that being located in Bondi naturally leans the menu towards seafood, making the most of the coastal setting. This diverse approach allows for a rich tapestry of flavors and dishes that reflect the essence of Spanish cuisine.

Meet the Culinary Team

Working alongside Kasif is Head Chef Alan Kropman, a culinary talent who has been with Aalia for years. Kasif describes Kropman as one of the best in the group, highlighting his dedication to food. “He has a full-time job at Aalia, yet he spends his off time at Sean’s because he just loves food,” Kasif shares.

The Hub in Bondi

Besa is situated in The Hub in Bondi, a space envisioned as a mini-Mediterranean enclave. With Da Orazio across the street and a nearby Harris Farm market, the area is designed to foster a vibrant community atmosphere. “We’ve got this beautiful vibe that takes up the precinct,” Kasif explains.

The Future of Spanish Cuisine in Sydney

As Sydney continues to evolve its culinary landscape, the question remains: will Spanish food become as popular in 2026 as Greek cuisine was in 2025? Recent openings like Alzado and Epula suggest a growing interest in Spanish flavors. With Besa poised to make a significant impact, it’s clear that the city’s relationship with Spanish cuisine is about to deepen.
