American Entrepreneur Aims to Transform Abandoned Spanish Village into Tourist Hotspot

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, transformative projects across the country exemplify potential in rural regeneration.

The abandoned village of Castro Jumpa in Zamora, which has been deserted for over three decades, is poised for a remarkable revival, thanks to American entrepreneur Jason Lee Beckwith. Beckwith has acquired this small border settlement near Portugal for €310,000 and plans to develop it into a vibrant tourist destination complete with accommodation, dining, and leisure facilities set amidst a natural landscape.

Originally listed for sale in 2022 at €260,000, this ambitious project will involve the complete restoration of the village’s 44 homes, along with the church, school, bar, and former civil guard barracks. Additionally, plans include the construction of a hotel, restaurant, and swimming pool. Beckwith intends to relocate to the area to personally oversee the restoration, with the first phase expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Castro Jumpa was established in 1946 by the company Iberduero to house workers during the construction of a nearby dam, but it has remained uninhabited since 1989 when the project concluded, leading families to leave the area.

To support this initiative, Beckwith is actively seeking international partners and investors, while also looking into public grants and European funding aimed at boosting rural development. The local Town Hall warmly welcomes this initiative as a significant economic opportunity; however, some environmental groups have raised concerns regarding its potential impact on the nearby Arribes del Duero Natural Park, a protected area subject to strict development regulations.

If successfully realized, this project could serve as a blueprint for how private investment and heritage preservation can effectively combat rural depopulation in Spain.
