Antigua Approves Budget of $21.7 Million (Without Raising Taxes)

Antigua’s Historic 2026 Budget: A Path Towards Enhanced Community Services

The Ayuntamiento de Antigua has made headlines with the unanimous approval of a significant budget for 2026, totaling €21,754,537. This marks an increase of over a million euros from the previous year, making it the largest budget in the municipality’s history. The enthusiastic approval reflects a shared vision among local leaders to elevate the quality of life for residents.

A Balanced and Strategic Budget

Mayor Matías Peña emphasized that this budget is meticulously balanced. Its primary aim is to improve services for the community while ensuring financial sustainability. By focusing on stability in both budgeting and public debt, the Ayuntamiento seeks to build a robust fiscal foundation that can serve both current needs and future growth.

Ambitious Public Services Initiatives

One of the standout features of the 2026 budget is the allocation for a new and comprehensive vial cleaning service. This initiative, which includes cleaning public spaces and urban waste collection, represents a significant investment of €2.9 million in the initial phase, with a total projected cost of €15.5 million over four years. Such a commitment underscores the Ayuntamiento’s dedication to maintaining a clean and hospitable environment for residents and visitors alike.

No Tax Increases Amid Expanded Services

Remarkably, this budget growth comes without any increase in local taxes or municipal fees. The Ayuntamiento has also maintained the free access to all municipal sports schools and cultural programs, including music education through the Emma music school, workshops, and various community events. This decision to keep services free highlights a community-oriented approach, ensuring that all citizens have access to valuable resources and experiences.

Increased Support for Social Services and Community Growth

The budget also demonstrates a strong commitment to social welfare. Enhanced funding for Social Services, Sports, Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishing signifies a holistic approach to community development. This includes a notable earmark of €127,000 for the development of a Historical Heritage Catalog, reinforcing Antigua’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity for future generations.

Strategic Investment of Surplus Funds

In addition to the key budget items, Mayor Peña announced that Antigua can utilize five million euros of surplus generated in 2024 for immediate investments in critical infrastructure. This strategic use of surplus funds reflects a proactive approach to enhancing community assets. Proposed projects include the development of parks and gardens, the asphalt repaving of streets, and critical repairs to the local sports pavilion, which has been in disrepair for years.

Looking Ahead: Transformation through Investment

The ambitious plans laid out in this budget signal a promising future for the municipality. By focusing on investment in public services and infrastructure without imposing additional financial burdens on citizens, Antigua sets a strong example for other municipalities seeking to foster growth and community well-being.

This unprecedented budget reflects a clear commitment to uplifting the Anthican community, positioning Antigua not only as a place of historical significance but also as a vibrant and supportive environment for all its residents.
