Be Free Fuerteventura Festival Returns: Celebrating Diversity and Pride

The Be Free Fuerteventura festival is back, with an exciting lineup of activities taking place from June 22 to June 29, 2025. As a cherished event within the framework of Fuerteventura Pride, the festival has become a beacon of diversity, culture, and support for the LGBTQI+ community on the island. Spearheaded by ALTIHAY Fuerteventura, alongside the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Cultural Department, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, and Clapso Producciones, this year’s festival promises to be more vibrant than ever.

A Shift in Timing

Rayco León, the Cultural Advisor, announced a noteworthy change for this year: “This year, Be Free Fuerteventura moves its dates to June as part of a crucial societal claim that remains relevant.” León highlighted the festival’s comprehensive program, developed in collaboration with various institutions and the ALTIHAY collective. He emphasized that this event goes beyond mere festivities, incorporating significant cultural elements such as cinema, poetry, theater, and other artistic disciplines.

Embracing Tourism and Diversity

Marlene Figueroa, the Tourism Advisor, expressed her enthusiasm for the festival, stating, “We are proud of Be Free Fuerteventura, as it showcases our society as free and respectful.” Looking ahead, Figueroa revealed plans to promote the festival in the UK with Jet2, one of the international Pride events that this tour operator will feature in 2026. This step aims to reach a broader audience and celebrate Fuerteventura’s growing recognition in the LGBTQI+ community.

Municipal Support for Equality

In a display of unity, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, the Equality Councilor, underscored the Town Hall’s support across different sectors, including Equality, Tourism, and Culture. “Holding the event during the summer will significantly enhance its visibility, thanks to the hard work of everyone involved,” Gutiérrez commented.

Celebrating Milestones

Carla Soto, the president of ALTIHAY Fuerteventura, expressed her pride in presenting the fourth edition of Be Free Fuerteventura, coinciding with the important anniversary of 20 years of same-sex marriage in Spain. Soto thanked the administrative bodies for their backing and emphasized the importance of celebrating Pride beyond major cities. The festival symbolizes the promotion of culture, inclusion, and diversity through various forms of artistic expression.

Overcoming Challenges

Israel Reyes from Clapso Producciones shared insights on the challenges involved in organizing such an impactful event. “We have managed to turn things around with a change of dates that aims to engage the community, preserving the essence of previous iconic events while conveying values of inclusivity and support.”

A Diverse Program Awaits

The programming for Be Free Fuerteventura 2025 kicks off with the first LGBTQI+ Poetry Contest at the Palace of Training and Congress. Following this, on June 23, the LGBTQI+ Film Showcase will unfold at the Insular Auditorium, promising a diverse array of cinematic experiences.

On June 26, attendees can look forward to a drag workshop featuring Grimassira Maeva, held at the Insular Youth Center. Later that day, the Palace of Training and Congress will host the Orgullo-Be Free concert, featuring artists such as Sofía Coll, Jorge González, Kuve, Gara Alemán, and Marta Umpiérrez, starting at 20:30.

The next day, June 27, will see an institutional event for Pride 2025 at noon. The schedule for the day features a book presentation at 19:00 by Miquel Fernández, followed by the highly anticipated ALTIHAY 2025 Awards and the Fuerte Petarda-Divas In Drags party at 21:00, a celebration supported by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Unforgettable Weekend Festivities

The weekend of June 28 will present the musical “Los Tacones de Papá” and the “Noche de Orgullo,” starting at 22:00, featuring DJs and eye-catching performances.

On the concluding day, June 29, festivities move to Playa de los Pozos in Puerto del Rosario, where participants can enjoy a March for Diversity and Memory, the “Aqua Drag” show, and a DJ session, ensuring a spectacular finish to the week-long celebration of pride and inclusivity.
