Major Investment for Residential Rehabilitation in El Cotillo

The Plenary Session of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has recently reached a significant milestone. In a unanimous decision, the Council approved a multi-year investment aimed at rehabilitating residential environments in El Cotillo, located within the municipality of La Oliva. This undertaking represents a substantial financial commitment, with a total of €1,128,172.94 allocated for the years 2024 to 2026.

Emphasis on Quality of Life

Lola García, the island’s president, underscored the importance of this initiative, expressing that it showcases the Cabildo’s “firm commitment” to housing issues. By focusing on the rehabilitation of residential areas, the Cabildo aims to enhance the quality of life for residents. This approach isn’t solely about infrastructure; it’s about fostering a better living environment for the community of El Cotillo.

A Collective Effort

In comments made during the announcement, Víctor Alonso, the Minister of Social Action and Housing, highlighted the crucial involvement of various government tiers in this project. He referred to it as “a social goal of the highest order.” Alonso emphasized the necessity of ongoing collaborative efforts between different municipalities to not only address rehabilitation needs but also to pursue new housing projects. Such initiatives will benefit from support from both the central government and the regional Government of the Canary Islands.

Part of a Broader Recovery Plan

The Program for the Rehabilitation of Residential Environments in El Cotillo is designed to revitalize a total of 138 homes. This initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the La Oliva Town Hall, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Spanish state. It is part of the broader Plan for Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience, which is being financed through the European Union’s NextGeneration EU funds in the Canary Islands. This collaboration exemplifies how local, regional, and national entities can work together to address housing challenges.

Economic Milestone

Nuria Cabrera, the Minister of Finance, remarked that the approval of this multi-year investment marks “a decisive step” towards realizing the project. This financial backing is expected to catalyze further developments, ensuring that the residents of El Cotillo benefit from improved living conditions.

Expansion of Rehabilitation Efforts Across Fuerteventura

The Cabildo is not stopping with El Cotillo. Other projects are currently in motion across the island, particularly in La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario. These initiatives are being rolled out in cooperation with local councils and other administrative entities at both state and regional levels. Importantly, there are plans in place for the construction of 57 new homes in La Oliva and nearly 100 in Puerto del Rosario, in neighborhoods such as Rosa Vila and Bernegal, as well as along Don Quijote Street.

A Commitment to Housing Access

Through these various actions, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura is reinforcing its commitment to enhancing housing access and improving residential environments island-wide. The ongoing initiatives reflect a developer-driven approach to community needs, promising a brighter, more sustainable future for residents throughout the region.
