Paladea La Oliva: A Culinary and Active Adventure in Villaverde

Villaverde, a charming locale in La Oliva, Fuerteventura, is set to become a hotbed of culinary and outdoor excitement from May 6 to May 10. The seventh edition of Paladea La Oliva beckons both residents and visitors to indulge in a unique fusion of farm-to-table cuisine and active tourism. As the festivities unfold, organizers anticipate over 15,000 attendees immersing themselves in this vibrant celebration.

The Essence of Paladea La Oliva

This popular festivity aims to create a dynamic environment where gastronomy, local producers, music, and outdoor sports converge in one lively space. The event has gained attention not only in the Canary Islands but also beyond, as its recent launch in Madrid highlighted its family-friendly atmosphere and impact on the local economy. Imagine wandering into Villaverde, sampling a tantalizing tapa, engaging in a live cooking demonstration, and then effortlessly switching gears to embark on a thrilling cycling or trail-running adventure the following day.

Culinary Delights on Display

Paladea La Oliva will showcase the talents of 23 restaurants across 21 booths—many of which will be shared—to ensure a rich diversity of culinary experiences. Attendees can expect an array of offerings, encompassing authentic Canarian cuisine that emphasizes local ingredients, as well as Italian influences, grilled specialties, and signature dishes from visionary chefs. Notable eateries participating include Oum, La Fábrica de las Croquetas, La Puipana, El Invernadero, El Horno, Olivo Corso, and Il Gatto Rosso, all contributing to the lively atmosphere of the festival.

Showcooking: Reviving Canarian Classics

One of the highlights of the festival is the program of showcookings. Among the distinguished chefs gracing the event will be Víctor Suárez, a Michelin-starred chef from Tenerife, renowned for his restaurant Haydée by Víctor Suárez. He’ll be presenting contemporary interpretations of Canarian recipes, joined by fellow chefs Yareli Pérez (La Puipana), Alexis Morales (El Invernadero), Borja Cabrera (El Horno), and Massimo Avarelli (La Pasqualina). These live cooking sessions are tailored to bridge the gap between technique and local products, thereby enhancing the public’s connection to the culinary arts.

Local Producers and Craftsmanship

Beyond tantalizing tastings, Paladea La Oliva offers a platform for local producers and artisans who embody Fuerteventura’s gastronomic identity. Handcrafted contributions span a spectrum from artisan gelato by Top Sweet and Vrebac Gelato to smoked fish by Ahu Mados Fuerteventura. Other notable participants include Agua Guanches, a local distillery, and José Juan Sosa Perdomo, a skilled craftsman specializing in traditional canary knives. In collaboration with Fuertegourmet, the festival will host competitions for the best dessert featuring local cheese, the top mojo sauce, and the most creative tapa, allowing culinary creativity to shine while staying rooted in traditional recipes.

Liquid Gold: Tastings and Pairing

The festival will not leave beverage enthusiasts wanting, as it includes tastings of beer, wine, and cava. Attendees can partake in demonstrations focused on the nuances of pairing these drinks with local cuisines. The fair ambiance invites visitors to taste, compare, and uncover new flavors, ensuring that local products remain at the forefront of the experience.

Embracing Nature: Sports Activities

In keeping with the event’s active ethos, Paladea La Oliva celebrates Fuerteventura’s stunning volcanic landscape with a well-planned schedule of sports activities. Participants can challenge themselves with a 10-kilometer trail run and a corresponding hiking route, both designed to explore the picturesque areas around Villaverde. For those seeking a more rugged experience, a mountain biking challenge covering approximately 50 kilometers awaits, bringing both thrill and scenic beauty to the outdoor adventure.

Family Fun and Music

Understanding the importance of catering to all ages, Paladea La Oliva will feature a range of activities targeting children, ensuring the festival is enjoyable for the entire family. Live musical performances will serve as enjoyable backdrops, enriching the event’s festive spirit and fostering an atmosphere conducive to making lasting memories.

A Celebration of Community

Organized by the La Oliva City Council alongside the Club Deportivo Caima and supported by the Fuerteventura Cabildo and Promotur (Government of the Canary Islands), Paladea La Oliva has solidified its place in Fuerteventura’s cultural calendar. With seven successful editions behind it, the festival not only promotes local products but also functions as a barometer for the vibrancy and dynamism of the region’s hospitality sector. It seamlessly blends leisure, gastronomy, and sport, drawing people together in celebration and community spirit.
