Rescuing Oral Tradition: The Launch of Canarian Tales and Legends
The General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage has taken a significant step in preserving the rich oral tradition of the Canary Islands by launching the sound series Canarian Tales and Legends on Spotify. This initiative aims to revive popular stories that have shaped the collective imagination of Canarian society for centuries. With tales like the Garoé Tree, Roberto’s Wall, and the Devil of Timanfaya, the series invites listeners to delve into the enchanting world of Canarian folklore.
A Journey Through Sound
The podcast consists of fourteen episodes, each dedicated to some of the most representative traditional tales from the archipelago. Through immersive narration, original music, and carefully curated soundscapes, listeners are transported into the heart of these stories. The tales are often intertwined with the natural landscape of the islands, featuring elements like rocks, ravines, mountains, springs, and paths, which adds a unique dimension to the listening experience.

The Broader Context: Identitaria Canarias
Canarian Tales and Legends is part of a larger initiative known as Identitaria Canarias, which runs from 2023 to 2026. This program aims to explore the concept of identity in the Canary Islands through various activities, including publications, exhibitions, creative contests, and field studies. The Government of the Canary Islands seeks to investigate, analyze, promote, and disseminate the Canarian identity of the 21st century through diverse scientific and artistic disciplines.
This multifaceted approach not only enriches the cultural landscape of the Canary Islands but also ensures that the stories and traditions that define the islands continue to resonate with future generations.
