FEAGA Kicks Off in Fuerteventura with Over 200 Stands and Tributes to the Delegates from the Mancomún of Antigua and Betancuria

La Feria Agrícola, Ganadera y Pesquera de Fuerteventura (FEAGA) Begins with a Celebration of Local Culture

The 38th edition of La Feria Agrícola, Ganadera y Pesquera de Fuerteventura, known as FEAGA, kicked off this Thursday, capturing the essence of the island’s agricultural and fishing sectors. With a notable increase in participation from local professionals and a range of new activities aimed at enhancing accessibility and innovative broadcasting methods, this year’s event promises to be a special celebration of Fuerteventura’s heritage.

A Mark of Community and Tradition

The inauguration ceremony was graced by several prominent figures, including Lola García, the President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, as well as Canary Islands’ Government President Fernando Clavijo and other significant regional representatives. García’s speech emphasized the importance of FEAGA as more than just a fair; it is a manifestation of the hard work, local products, and the rich traditions that define the island’s primary sector.

“We are witnessing how Fuerteventura is revitalized through the rains, thereby dedicating this edition particularly to agriculture, which is constantly innovating and adapting,” García explained. She also acknowledged the vital role of livestock and fishing industries, which will feature prominently over the three-day event through various activities.

Institutional Support for the Primary Sector

Highlighting the institutional backing for the agricultural sector, Lola García remarked that over nine million euros had been allocated within the last year from the Cabildo to support the competitiveness of local industries. She expressed a strong commitment to continue providing assistance in light of current international conflicts impacting the economy and primary activities.

Fernando Clavijo echoed these sentiments, noting the crucial role of agriculture in the island’s development. He described FEAGA as a showcase of the agricultural sector’s resilience and its potential for growth, emphasizing the need for improved water management and irrigation infrastructure. This recognition further reinforces how agriculture, fishing, and livestock farming are intertwined with Fuerteventura’s identity and landscape.

A Technological Leap Forward

Enrique Pérez, the Insular Councillor of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishing, expressed gratitude towards all professionals involved in the event and described FEAGA as the largest gathering of the primary sector in the Canary Islands. This year’s edition marks a step towards modernization and inclusivity. The fair will incorporate a technological component, allowing attendees to experience main events through live streaming via a QR code that will be accessible on social media and the official website.

Efforts to enhance accessibility are also notable; visitors will benefit from a dedicated train service from parking areas to the fairgrounds and seating arrangements for individuals with reduced mobility, ensuring everyone can participate fully in the celebration.

Expanded Activities and Engagement

Regional Councillor Narvay Quintero pointed out that the Canary Islands Government enhanced its presence at this year’s FEAGA with a larger exhibition area and a more extensive program of events. Focusing on educational initiatives for both adults and children, the fair seeks to engage the entire community in understanding the significance of agriculture and the local economy.

This week has already seen progress on a much-needed financial framework for peripheral regions, with the European Parliament approving a report advocating for specific funding for these areas. This represents the culmination of extensive collaborative work carried out by the Government of the Canary Islands alongside local sectors and supported by various regional entities.

Local Collaboration and Community Involvement

The fair’s success has been bolstered by the unwavering support from local authorities, exemplified by Juan Cabrera, the first deputy mayor of Antigua. He noted the importance of this event for the community and pledged the municipality’s full cooperation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Local police are assigned to manage traffic and ensure safe access during the fair days.

Highlights of FEAGA 2026

This year, FEAGA features over 200 stands spanning various categories, including commercial, institutional, producers, and artisan markets, along with food stalls and association booths. The fair not only fosters economic activity but also celebrates culture through honors awarded during the opening ceremony.

During this inaugural session, tributes were paid to Tomás Acosta Cabrera and Vicente Hernández Santana, who have dedicated fifty years to their respective roles at the Mancomun of Antigua and Betancuria. Additionally, the 30th anniversary of the Regulatory Council of Queso Majorero was celebrated, reinforcing local pride in quality food production.

The day ended with an insightful tour of the institutional hall of FEAGA 2026, as authorities engaged further with exhibitors and local organizations like ADISFUER, strengthening the connections within Fuerteventura’s vibrant community.

FEAGA truly embodies the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and dedication, making it a cornerstone event for the agricultural and maritime sectors of Fuerteventura. As activities unfold over the coming days, the fair will undoubtedly continue to shine a light on the island’s commitment to its primary industries while fostering community involvement and engagement.
