A Sporting Event Bids Farewell in 2024, Solidifying Its Status as One of the Island’s Most Iconic Events

The Club Deportivo Herbania has celebrated the resounding success of the XXV Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos – Fuerteventura, which took place this past Sunday, October 13. The event featured over 270 swimmers, including 110 women and 146 men, arriving from various regions of Spain such as Toledo, Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona, as well as from European countries like the United Kingdom and Germany, among others.

This year’s event was not just notable for the high turnout of participants but also for the massive crowd that filled the avenue at the Corralejo dock. Family and friends gathered to cheer on the swimmers, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for everyone involved.

Winners and a Festive Environment Amidst the Waves

Despite the challenging conditions in La Bocaina, which separates Isla de Lobos from Fuerteventura, all swimmers reached the finish line, many sporting broad smiles and humorously “asking for fresh water after so much saltwater,” as one swimmer commented after completing the 3,500 meters between the two islands. The day was a spectacular blend of effort and enjoyment, underscored by the vibrant rhythms of the Bloco Da Ilha percussion band, which set a festive tone, complemented by Zumba sessions led by instructors from Zumba Fuerteventura, and DJ Joe Valdivia’s music.

In the men’s category, Tomás Carrascosa from Club Nadamas emerged as the big winner, crossing the finish line with an impressive time of 43 minutes and 9 seconds. He was closely followed by Daniel González and Raúl Fernández, both from Club Tridan Danysport, who claimed second and third places, respectively.

On the women’s side, the top honor went to Sarai Del Pino Afonso, who finished in 52 minutes and 9 seconds. Erika Rivero and Carla López, both from Club Salinas de Santa Lucía, secured the second and third positions.

The race also welcomed the presence of European Champion and World Third Place finisher, Arancha Aranega, alongside the oldest participant, 82-year-old Mauricio Zanahan, who continues to compete in swimming events, demonstrating that passion for the sport knows no age limits. Additionally, the presence of young swimmers, some as young as 15, underscores the commitment of new generations to this iconic event, signifying a bright future for swimming on the island.

Twenty-Five Editions Solidifying a Key Event for Fuerteventura

Having reached its 25th edition, this event has become a benchmark both within and outside the Canary Islands, recognized not only for its excellent organization but also for its role in promoting tourism, economy, and the sports culture of Fuerteventura and the municipality of La Oliva.

The president of Club Deportivo Herbania, Inma Díaz, expressed gratitude on behalf of the club to all participants, volunteers, and collaborators who made the success of the event possible. “It is a point of pride to see how, after 25 editions, this event continues to grow and attract athletes from all over the world, who come not only to compete but also to enjoy everything our island has to offer,” Díaz affirmed.

The event benefited immensely from the essential support of paddlers who accompanied and guided the swimmers throughout the bay, along with the dedicated team of volunteers that ensured everything ran smoothly.

Awards and Recognitions

The first male and female finishers each received €250 in cash. Second-place winners were rewarded with a set of products from Euronics, while those who secured third place received a product set from Quesería Felipa La Montañeta.

The XXV Travesía could not have been realized without the invaluable collaboration of the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura, the Department of Sports, Puertos Canarios, the Town Hall of La Oliva, and the Sports Department. The event was also sponsored by various companies including Crimera Fuerteventura SL, Tripasion Eventos, Barco El Majorero, Barco Celia Cruz, Naviera Armas, Crearte, IR Maxoinversiones, Euronics, Asesoría Umpiérrez Rebordinos, Spine Fisioterapia Fuerteventura, Oby Group, Seguros Tiquital, Quesería Felipa La Montañeta, Restaurante El Cangrejo Colorao, and Vitaldent.

With an atmosphere filled with excitement, the XXV Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos – Fuerteventura bids farewell for another year, fortifying its position as one of the island’s most cherished events, while the countdown to the 26th edition has already begun.
