Fuerteventura Launches IsLABentura: A New Hub for Script Development
On April 23, 2025, Fuerteventura marked a significant milestone in the world of cinematic storytelling by hosting the inaugural session of IsLABentura. This innovative project aims to create a script laboratory focused on developing stories set in or inspired by the unique landscapes and culture of the Canary Islands. The kickoff event took place at the Hotel Mirador in Puerto del Rosario, where participants began diving into the documentation phase of their projects.
Meet the Talented Writers
Among the talented participants are two remarkable screenwriters from Fuerteventura: Yaiza Berrocal and Gracia Solera. Both writers have already begun to receive valuable mentorship from the Fuerteventura Film Commission. This support not only encourages individual creativity but also fosters a vibrant environment for cinematic arts in the region.
Isla de Lobos: A Thrilling Tale
Yaiza Berrocal is working on her feature film script titled Isla de Lobos, which delves into the suspenseful world of military life. The story follows a group of soldiers stationed on the small islets of Lobos and La Graciosa, as they confront a looming threat of invasion. Known for her award-winning work on Mariposas Negras, a film that garnered a Goya for Best Animation, Berrocal is in good hands under the guidance of Marta Buchaca, who has penned notable films like Fenómenas. Her project is set to immerse audiences in a gripping narrative while showcasing the serene yet formidable backdrop of Fuerteventura.
Siempreviva: A Unique Family Journey
On the other hand, Gracia Solera is diligently documenting her script for the series Siempreviva. With an impressive résumé that includes the popular documentary Topuria: Matador, Solera’s new venture is a distinctive road movie centered around a family that makes their living through post-mortem portraits. Guided by Pablo Bartolomé, known for his work on the series HIT, Solera’s project promises to entwine the complexity of family dynamics with the intricate art form she explores.
Local Leadership Welcomes the Writers
The initiative received warm welcomes from local leaders, including Lola García, the island’s president, and Nereida Calero, the director of the Fuerteventura Film Commission. They expressed their enthusiasm for the writers, emphasizing how excited they are for the ideas that will transform into stories reflective of the island’s rich culture and landscapes. “From the Cabildo and Fuerteventura Film Commission, we will continue supporting initiatives that promote talent and help develop a solid audiovisual industry for the future,” García declared.
IsLABentura: A Catalyzing Force in the Audiovisual Landscape
IsLABentura Canarias serves as an international laboratory dedicated to identifying promising projects for film and television scripts connected to the unique essence of the Canary Islands. Organized by the Government of the Canary Islands through Canary Islands Film, this initiative relies on the essential collaboration of local governing bodies, such as Fuerteventura Film Commission in this instance.
This year, 16 screenwriters from across the Canary Islands are participating, with a diverse range of genres being represented: seven scripts for feature films, seven for series, and even projects focusing on animated cinema.
Learning and Development Opportunities
After this exciting kickoff, the writers will engage in weekend workshops such as “El pitch inevitable” facilitated by Josep Gatell and “Ser showrunner: cuando y por qué” led by Javier Olivares. These sessions, held in Fuerteventura, aim to refine their storytelling and pitching skills, contributing further to their development as skilled storytellers and helping shape the future of the island’s audiovisual narrative.
As Fuerteventura embarks on this journey with IsLABentura, it opens doors not only for its local talent but also for creating stories that resonate with audiences far beyond the islands, enriching the global tapestry of cinema with narratives rooted in its unique culture and geography.
