As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, significant infrastructure developments are on the horizon.
The Government Council has recently approved an updated budget plan to double the capacity of the Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant on Fuerteventura. With a total investment of €15.6 million, the project is scheduled for completion by 2029.
Spearheaded by the Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Water, led by Manuel Miranda, the initiative aims to enhance the water cycle in Fuerteventura. The updated financial plan allocates funds for the project as follows: €500,000 in 2026, €6.5 million in 2027, €7.1 million in 2028, and €1.4 million in 2029, culminating in a total budget of €15,615,469.
The tender for this significant expansion is expected to be announced in the first half of May. This project addresses the current facility’s saturation issue, which presently processes around 3,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily. The expansion will enable the plant to treat up to 6,000 cubic meters each day.
Key components of the project include the enhancement of treatment lines, the integration of advanced purification systems, improvements in solid and sand removal, and the establishment of new sludge dehydration facilities. The aim is to elevate the quality of the treated water, making it suitable for irrigation in agriculture and maintaining green spaces.
Furthermore, the initiative is designed to reduce discharges into the sea, improve existing wastewater management practices, and strengthen the environmental integration of the facility, which is located in the Risco Prieto industrial area.
A collaboration agreement was signed in December between the Government of the Canary Islands, Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the City Council of Puerto del Rosario to facilitate the development of this project once awarded.
