Insights into Betancuria’s Future: An Interview with the Mayor

In a recent interview, the Mayor of Betancuria shared insights into the local government’s evolving projects, the recent electoral changes, and the future outlook for the municipality. Although the new coalition between the Canarian Coalition (CC) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) may not be as close-knit as the previous administration under ex-president Sergio Lloret, the mayor remains optimistic about establishing strong institutional relationships.

A Shift Towards Renewal

When asked about his political future, the mayor indicated that he has led the municipality through five legislatures, achieving majority support each time—except for his first term in 2007 when a coalition with the PSOE was formed. “I won’t be repeating in the upcoming election. Unidos por Betancuria will undertake significant renewal efforts aimed at 2027,” he stated, indicating his desire to usher in new leadership while maintaining continuity of governance.

Electoral Changes in Valle de Santa Inés

One of the notable changes in the recent elections was the establishment of a dedicated polling station in Valle de Santa Inés, underscored by the mayor’s desire to enhance voter accessibility. “The population there has reached 635,” he explained. “Some residents requested this change to avoid long queues. The initiative was well-received and facilitated voting for nearly half the census.”

Major Projects from the Previous Administration

Reflecting on his past term, the mayor mentioned approximately 37 projects initiated by the municipality, many of which fall under cooperative plans with the Cabildo, the local government. Among the highlights are the renovations of the San Sebastián hermitage, a new interpretation center in Betancuria, and the Valle de Santa Inés People’s Museum. These projects aim to enrich the community’s cultural heritage while improving local infrastructure.

Addressing Demographic Concerns

Despite common perceptions, the mayor clarified that the majority of the population in Betancuria is now under 60, with a significant youth demographic: “Of 580 residents, only 230 are over 60.” A key initiative has been ensuring legal frameworks for residents wishing to build their own homes. The goal is to attract younger residents, boost tourism, and stimulate the local economy by creating more employment opportunities.

The Future of Town Hall

The mayor expressed his anticipation for moving into a new town hall, emphasizing its necessity for modern municipal operations. The project is awaiting final approvals and should commence soon, marking an important step forward for the local government.

Relations with New Political Partners

Transitioning from a strong relationship with Sergio Lloret to collaborating with the new CC-PSOE coalition could present challenges but also opportunities. “There’s no reason my relationship with the new coalition should be negative,” he remarked. “As elected representatives, we owe it to our constituents to maintain respect and understanding among ourselves for the common good.”

Overcoming Economic Hurdles

When discussing the economic revitalization of Betancuria, the mayor acknowledged existing challenges but was optimistic about potential improvements. Alternative transportation solutions, such as enhancing access routes from both the north and south, are being explored rather than pursuing a costly tunnel. The mayor believes that this legislative period presents the best chance for improved connectivity.

Revitalizing Historical Sites

The historic convent of San Buenaventura is another focal point for the mayor. Plans include preserving it while transforming it into a cultural hub for significant events. “It’s essential to maintain its character while adapting it for modern uses, ensuring it continues to be a part of our community’s cultural narrative,” he stated.

Environmental Initiatives

Concerning the Peñitas reservoir’s sedimentation issues, the mayor pointed to the need for cleanup efforts to restore it as a crucial environmental resource. “Our focus should be on revitalizing it into a sustainable wetland, recognizing the sacrifices made for its construction.”

Upcoming Local Festivals

As preparations for the regional patron saint festivities approach, the mayor confirmed ongoing efforts to enhance the celebration. Collaborations with local representatives aim to bolster the festivities for visitors and locals alike, with plans already in motion for next September.

Growth in Tourism

The designation of Betancuria as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain has garnered attention and increased tourist traffic. The mayor noted a rise in visitors eager to experience the local culture. “Tourism not only showcases our cultural expressions but also contributes positively to the local economy,” he concluded.

In a rapidly changing political landscape, the Mayor of Betancuria remains focused on fostering strong community ties, launching significant projects, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. This proactive approach is paving the way for a bright future in this picturesque municipality.
