El Grupo Taburiente: The Heart of the 37th Antiqua Craft Fair
The 37th Antiqua Craft Fair, scheduled from May 7 to 10, promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture and craftsmanship, with El Grupo Taburiente as the headlining musical act. This cheerful gathering will take place in the picturesque square of the Antiqua Church and surrounding streets. It’s a great opportunity to immerse oneself in the local artisan scene, and with over 200 artisans showcasing their works, there’s plenty to see and experience.
A Showcase of Craftsmanship
This year’s fair is a major event organized by the Antiqua City Council in collaboration with the Mafasca collective. With around 200 artisans representing a whopping 40 different crafts from all over the Canary Islands, attendees can expect a rich variety of artistry. The fair includes more than 200 artisan booths and an additional 30 stalls dedicated to local agricultural and livestock products. As visitors stroll through the fair, they will encounter everything from handmade jewelry and textiles to pottery and local delicacies.
Economic Support for Artisans
The 37th edition comes with a price tag of €250,000, significantly supported by the Fuerteventura Cabildo’s Department of Industry and Craft, which is contributing €100,000 this year—up from a mere €25,000 previously. “Lolina Negrín, the area’s councilor, recognized the need for increased funding to ensure the fair’s success,” notes the Mayor of Antiqua, Matías Peña. He highlights the importance of this support in promoting local craftsmanship, which Marlene Figueroa, the island councilor for tourism, refers to as a vital part of Fuerteventura’s cultural heritage.
Location and Setup
For the past four years, the fair has taken place around the Antiqua Church, with preparations well underway as the City Council begins setting up booths. The transition from the previous venue at the Antiqua mill has proven beneficial, allowing local businesses—bars, restaurants, and shops—to thrive during this mega-event. “We want to continue breathing life into the businesses of our village,” adds Mayor Peña.
Adjusted Operating Hours
Notably, this year’s fair will feature adjusted closing times for both daily and Sunday events. Daily closures will now occur at 8 PM instead of 9 PM, while the grand finale on Sunday will conclude earlier, at 3 PM. These changes, made in response to artisan requests, aim to facilitate the packing up process and assist artisans in catching departing flights and ferries back home.
Celebrating Artisan Talent: Bernhard Glauser
One of the highlights of this year’s fair will be the presence of Bernhard Glauser, a skilled goldsmith who migrated from Switzerland to Fuerteventura primarily for surf—a passion that ultimately led him to settle on the island in 1996. Glauser, the recipient of the 2026 Insular Craft Award, channels his artistry into creating unique jewelry that reflects the island’s natural beauty. “My pieces often embody the landscapes and contrasts of the island,” he shares, showcasing materials such as silver, gold, platinum, and wood to craft timeless masterpieces.
Volunteering and Community Engagement
A key factor in facilitating this fair is the volunteer work from the Mafasca collective. Margarita de Vera, a representative of the cultural association, urges the public to attend and support local artisans by purchasing their handmade products. “Every small purchase contributes significantly to our artisans’ livelihood,” she reminds attendees. This collaborative spirit exemplifies the community’s commitment to preserving local art and culture.
Event Promotion and Community Impact
By investing in this event, not only does Antiqua celebrate its craftsmanship, but it also fosters a cultural environment that enriches the community and promotes tourism. As attendees engage with artisans, enjoy local music, and savor Fuerteventura’s culinary offerings, they become part of a tapestry that supports and sustains the island’s rich heritage and the hardworking individuals who make it come alive.
Embracing Local Culture
As El Grupo Taburiente takes the stage to provide a lively musical backdrop, the fair will serve as a delightful reminder of the vibrant cultural fabric of Antiqua. It is an event where artisans, musicians, and the public come together to celebrate creativity, craftsmanship, and community spirit, ensuring that tradition thrives in the modern era. Visitors are invited to partake, enjoy, and support, making this year’s Antiqua Craft Fair a memorable occasion for all.
