The island of Fuerteventura is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, but nestled within it lies the historic village of Betancuria, a gem recently rejuvenated through extensive façade rehabilitation projects. The efforts, funded by the Government of the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Tourism and Employment, have transformed key streets in this picturesque village, enhancing its cultural heritage.
This initiative, which amounted to a budget of €117,701, falls under the program “Pueblos más bonitos de España en Canarias,” championed by the ministry led by Jéssica de León. The project aims not just to beautify Betancuria but also to respect and preserve its historical essence, reinforcing the community’s value.
Héctor Mateo, the Director General of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Quality Tourism, expressed his delight at the project’s completion. He emphasized that few places encapsulate the essence of historical and cultural heritage like Betancuria. The completion of these works is a testament to the commitment of the government to preserve the locality’s identity while upgrading its tourist infrastructure.
The Government’s sustained engagement in Betancuria is reflected in an annual investment of €100,000 dedicated to the “Villa Capital Histórica de Canarias” initiative. An additional €100,000 is channeled towards the “Pueblos más bonitos de España en Canarias” program. These investments align with complementary activities, like the €293,021 spent for the enhancement of rest areas and pedestrian pathways in Vega de Río Palma; a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes sustainability and tourist accessibility.
In January, a landmark cooperation agreement was signed between the Government of the Canary Islands and municipalities belonging to the “Pueblos Más Bonitos de España” network. This agreement is set to facilitate concrete improvements in Betancuria, enhancing public space quality, landscape integration, and accessibility. Importantly, it aims to ensure that tourism development fosters local community well-being.
Mayor Enrique Cerdeña noted that these renovations represent one of the most significant transformations in the historic center of Betancuria. The improvements are expected to greatly enhance the visitor experience, making it more enjoyable for tourists who come to explore the charming village.
One of the project’s key components included a meticulous study that involved stripping away various layers of paint from buildings. This painstaking process allowed the restoration team to recover original hues that historically adorned the façades. The newly restored colors—shades of blue and deep crimson—breathe life into the village, showcasing its traditional aesthetic.
The completed façade rehabilitation not only elevates the cultural allure of Betancuria but also positions Fuerteventura as a prime tourist destination. This project’s success solidifies Betancuria’s status as an essential stop for anyone interested in the island’s cultural heritage and history.
