A New Era for Water Supply: Aguas de Antigua’s Desalination Plant Upgrade
Aguas de Antigua has successfully completed a significant expansion and modernization of the Montaña Blanca Desalination Plant. This project, which involved a budget of €249,708.62, represents a substantial investment in enhancing the water supply for the local communities.
Increased Capacity to Meet Demand
One of the most noteworthy outcomes of this renovation is the plant’s enhanced production capacity, which has now reached an impressive 6,553 cubic meters of water per day. According to a statement from the Antigua City Council, this upgraded capacity not only meets the current demand but also exceeds the water needs of Caleta de Fuste and surrounding coastal towns. This is particularly crucial during the summer months when water consumption peaks due to tourism and increased local usage.

Financing Through Local Success
The modernization of the desalination facility has been financed through the profits generated by Aguas de Antigua itself. This sustainable approach not only reaffirms the company’s commitment to improving water distribution services but also enhances energy efficiency within the plant. With the installation of two new desalination modules, the company guarantees an uninterrupted water supply throughout the challenging summer season, ensuring residents and tourists alike can rely on consistent access to fresh water.
Leadership Support and Community Engagement
The upgrade project was recently showcased during a visit by Matías Peña García, the mayor and president of Aguas de Antigua. Accompanied by Gonzalo Báez, the company’s manager, and the technical team, Peña García explored the facilities to witness firsthand the advancements made. He expressed pride in the professional capabilities and dedication of the team that made the upgrade possible.
“The professionalism and experience of Aguas de Antigua set the bar high in modernizing and improving water distribution in our coastal municipalities. The reinvestment of profits into enhancing performance and respecting environmental sustainability is something we can all be proud of,” said Mayor Peña. He also took the opportunity to commend the entire staff for their efforts in achieving these significant milestones.

A Future-Focused Initiative
This project underscores the vital role of reliable water supply systems in both urban and rural communities. With the successful completion of this upgrade, Aguas de Antigua stands equipped to not only serve the current needs of the residents but also cushion future growth, ensuring that both locals and visitors enjoy plentiful access to one of life’s most essential resources—water.
