An Observatory for Preserving Historical Ensembles

El Gobierno autonómico impulsará una estrategia común para proteger los Bienes de Interés Cultural con apoyo de los cabildos y ayuntamientos

In a significant move to safeguard the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands, the Gobierno de Canarias has announced the establishment of a permanent Observatory. This initiative aims to protect the archipelago’s historical sites and improve the connection between citizens and their cultural legacy. After a recent gathering of experts on Fuerteventura, the need for an integrated approach to heritage conservation became exceedingly clear.

This initiative underscores a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, including local councils (cabildos) and municipalities. It seeks to coordinate heritage policies across public administrations, setting the stage for a cohesive approach to conservation.

The Foundation of a New Strategy

The Government of the Canary Islands is taking the helm of this new protection strategy, a consensus-driven project born from a meeting of over twenty specialists held at the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura. This dialogue culminated in the signing of the ‘Declaración de Betancuria,’ which outlines a roadmap for future actions.

The Dirección General de Cultura y Patrimonio Cultural is spearheading three key initiatives aimed at protecting the Bienes de Interés Cultural. Collaboration between the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Ayuntamiento de Betancuria is central to this strategic plan. Ultimately, this project aims to enhance the relationship citizens have with their historical surroundings, making cultural heritage more accessible and engaging.

El Observatorio del Patrimonio

The first major step is the establishment of an observatory, envisioned as a hub for shared learning and collaboration. This new body will bring together officials from the Gobierno de Canarias, island cabildos, and local councils on a regular basis. Here, technical experts and policymakers will engage in dialogue, addressing the sector’s needs.

The observatory will serve as a vital foundation for strategic decision-making, ensuring that future public policies are informed by real and validated data. Members will collaborate to share best practices and identify common challenges faced by municipalities, creating a united front in heritage protection.

A comprehensive diagnostic study of the current socio-economic and territorial state of historical sites will also be conducted. This analysis will allow the government to devise a tailored strategy aimed at promoting sustainable development within these areas.

Promoting Heritage through Technology

In tandem with these initiatives, the regional administration is already working on developing new digital tools for cultural dissemination. The Culture department is keen to make the rich heritage of the islands more accessible to residents, emphasizing community engagement and pride in local history.

One of the standout measures includes the launch of a website to centralize all cultural dynamization activities. This platform will feature comprehensive information about heritage routes and events taking place in historical areas, ensuring users have up-to-date resources at their fingertips.

Ultimately, these initiatives aim to strengthen the emotional bond between local communities and their historical legacies. The authorities hold high hopes that this platform will encourage more responsible cultural tourism. With increased visibility and protection of Canarian heritage, the involvement of society will be crucial in this mission.
